The decision between “ask the coked-out robot to draw the building you’re literally sitting in” vs “send an intern with an iphone downstairs” is sure indicative of some things

Contest!

How many inaccuracies can you spot in the AI-generated image of Oakland City Hall that was sent to media in a press release from the mayor's office today?

Send us your list and you could win some Oaklandside merch.

An AI image of Oakland City Hall is missing some stuff…can you spot it?
A press release announcing Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee’s State of the City speech included a curious picture of a civic landmark.

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important

⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

My latest column: The NBA is now streaming (ugh); the return of "Nobody Wants This" and "The Diplomat" to Netflix; a new Apple mystery based on the other series of novels by "Slow Horses" author Mick Herron; and Tim Robinson investigates a chair conspiracy on HBO Max. And more! (Gift link)
Here’s what’s worth streaming in October 2025 on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and more
The NBA takes a big leap into streaming, while viewers can cozy up to Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This’ or freak out to the Halloween horror of ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ and ‘It: Welcome to Derry’

This whole section really.
Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.
AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations:

this business model should be flatly illegal

taking on a bunch of debt to buy a company and then burning the company to the ground to service that debt while paying yourselves huge fees is a purely destructive practice that has never once had a positive outcome

ban it completely

It’s official: EA is going private.

The leveraged buyout will be financed by a staggering $20 billion of debt, which likely means some *aggressive* cost cutting is ahead for EA in the coming months and years.

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

Apple is pushing back Friday's debut of THE SAVANT until who-knows-when. Given they were still promoting the premiere as of last Thursday, seems likely this was the company being super cautious and trying to avoid a right-wing backlash www.vulture.com/article/appl...

The show features Jessica Chastain’s character infiltrating white supremacist cells across America.
