whether it's college students protesting or the federal government arresting journalists, both sides have made troubling moves on free speech

This is a popular misconception. People think that because it’s gay to have straight sex, it means it’s straight to have gay sex. Gay sex doesn’t make you straight. Having a job does.
fellas is it straight to have gay sex?

look, you have to admit: you can bonesaw way more of your critics to death in Saudi Arabia than you can here. and, ultimately, isn't that what we're all looking for? well, all of us who haven't been bonesaw'd to death
Tucker Carlson: "Saudi Arabia [...] is kind of a weirdly free place.”

Hillary Clinton: "The example that the kingdom is setting for the right kind of development [...] that is a very strong model for other parts of the world"

The goal should not be to get some small-bore stuff passed before the pendulum swings again. It should be to break the pendulum once and for all.

man I was the least interesting 23 year old in the world and this just seems like an incredibly depressing way to be 23 to me

I know it's objectively scary but my main emotional response to the fulton county thing is that it's just so fucking *stupid*. it is insulting to be governed by people who are chasing conspiracy theories from half a decade ago

"he has queer kids" and "he attacked a left-wing congresswoman" does not seem like a fact pattern I would want to draw attention to as a conservative
The right never misses a chance to smear queer kids for something they have nothing to do with. It’s basically a provocation to violence.

And in reality the guy who assaulted Omar was a pro Trump nut

something to bear in mind is that they were quiet about the "51st state" bullshit until the Alberta stuff came up again, so the fact that they've slunk off from their attempt to annex Greenland should be seen as a reprieve rather than a victory

guy so fascist he can only conceive of an opposition that's other kinds of fascist
This is a response to Serwer’s article and it’s just completely divorced from any way a mentally well-adjusted person would think.

tbh this does seem low for Putin, the only leader on this list who is currently at war with another country

notwithstanding that the guy sucked and deserved exactly this wife this is legitimately a little chilling lol

LBJ is a cool topic for presidential rankings because on the one hand he did a bunch of incredibly important and good domestic policy and then on the other hand Vietnam

lyman stone is cool because he believes something that a significant percentage of American Christian believe implicitly but unlike them he's just smart enough to be stupid enough to say it in a way that's explicit enough to be incredibly creepy

I'm not going to stake out a position as a huge Online Dating Defender or anything but I don't think bars are particularly better, it just shifts the marginal person not getting a date from "can't hold a conversation by text" to "thinks bars are too loud"
I see a lot of visualizations of one year of a person's online dating (a 21M from London in this case). Seems miserable. Is getting drunk in a bar or club making a comeback as a dating strategy? Source: buff.ly/ZvAbOdz

I’m going to urge caution with the “targeted killing” language here. DHS has been clearly filming and IDing observers, and we’ve all assumed they’re making some kind of list of us. If Pretti had been regularly observing in any capacity, there’s a decent chance he’d been documented.
CNN is reporting that federal authorities may have been collecting information and "documenting details" about Alex Pretti before killing him on Saturday, and that officers tackled him a week earlier. www.cnn.com/2026/01/27/u...
Alex Pretti was in earlier confrontation with federal agents who tackled him, broke his rib, sources say | CNN

it does seem fair to draw a distinction between "casualties of WWII" and "victims of the Holocaust" (not least because the former includes a bunch of Nazis), but it is straightforwardly disrespectful of e.g. gay men who died in the camps to assert their experience was fundamentally different
The banality of evil: how dare you suggest that people other than Jews perished in the Holocaust.

it's so cool that Trump's single most consistent belief is an absolute need to press the "make the economy explode" button

people frequently hallucinate that Trump is in some secret way "less conservative" than he appears. that's nonsense, but he is politically a New Yorker in ways that occasionally clash with conservative orthodoxy
Trump: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident."

trump wants to kill you. whether it’s an ICE agent shooting you, a cancer drug trial being defunded, increased air pollution, or defunding safe streets funding, the one universal thread in all of their policies is that they think the very idea of making the world a better place is a liberal hoax
