this is brilliant: it has made me realise that I am taking the same approach to LLMs that I take to alcohol (the advantages of using them are not sufficient to offset the risks; I only find myself wanting to try when I'm really stressed out; and I know myself enough to know it would be addictive)
LLM companies make the academic dishonesty equivalent of heroin, and we do not have academic honesty equivalents of methadone yet

I suspect we won't fully appreciate this sentiment until AI makes it no longer true, and the passion projects of human labor become comparatively scarce.

Hiiii!!! A simple check of wikipedia would reveal that Jes Staley was fired in 2021 and ate a lifetime ban from the British finance industry because of his ties to Epstein coming to light! Just thought folks would enjoy knowing that!
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

i do think once it gets announced once the petition gets verified, the right-wing influencer world in the US is going to start pushing for turning Alberta into American Manchuria
It's remarkable how little interest Trump or those in his orbit seem to take in it, but their attention is so easily distracted this is why I don't underestimate the threat THEY pose vs the separatists themselves.

Any picture of a Canadian midsize city looks more like a U.S. midsize city than a U.S. midsize city

Is this Buffalo? Indianapolis? Milwaukee? Salt Lake City? Nashville? Use it in your next powerpoint and see if anyone notices

@sharonk.bsky.social obviously doesn't need me to tell her this but the idea that nobody in Democratic politics is raising alarm bells over this because no one in the general public cares is insufficient. Nobody in elite politics cares either. That's the main problem. The liberal elite is sclerotic.
It's not great that Democratic FP priorities are largely outsourced to the three biggest clowncar think tanks in Washington.

One thing Elkins's LEGACY OF VIOLENCE made clear was counterinsurgency, historically, looked a lot like what's happening in MN. Arbitrary brutality, extra-legal behavior, etc. "Hearts and minds" was a PR campaign the Brits sold to the US during the Malayan emergency, where they hid the ugly bits.
