Smartphone cameras are leaning hard on AI, but is it helping or hurting image quality? I look at why hardware still matters more than hype.

So yes, this AI can hallucinate details into the photos. Details that aren't actually there. Obviously the AI won't go around inventing completely new faces for the subjects in the photos, but if a photo is taken in suboptimal lighting conditions (like harsh overhead lights),

The new phones have AI that's more agentic and generative: AI processes the photo as it's being taken and saves the already enhanced picture in the gallery. That's all happening under the hood, without any user input, and without the possibility to turn that processing off. It's a software feature.
