something I've been acutely aware of for over a decade, but which the past couple of years have really brought into relief, is that neurodiversity and trans rights are so deeply intertwined they could rightly be considered facets of the same cause. Certainly, our enemies understand them that way
then, the transphobes , feeling victorious at how many people they have made unhappy and despairing in the previous week, move on to anything else that has a spectrum and the possibility of more colours than they can conceive - such hateful people - they cannot understand anything that is not THEM

like i have been saying, if you have ADHD you should be standing with trans people on their medical rights for basic moral and solidarity reasons but also the practical reason that you can fight at their barricade or you can fight at ours but it's the same fight

I wrote a short thread in response to @thesicktimes.org on the importance of cross-disability work when it comes writing about Covid, autism, and developmental disabilities. 🧵
As a long hauler, I generally love your work, but I really think your coverage of autism and developmental disabilities would benefit from a cross-disability approach and from connecting with organizations and self-advocates who work in those disability areas. 1/

There’s more attention today on the childhood vaccine schedule. Here’s what you need to know: 19thnews.org/2025/10/chil...
The childhood vaccine schedule: What is it and why do we need one?
A series of recommended shots that health providers administer to children as they age has been a recent target of President Donald Trump and his administration.

It’s important that while watching the quack safari that is ACIP to really pay attention to *what specific harms they think vaccines cause*.

This is what Hibbeln is demanding, but the conspiracy theorists can only make vague, hand-wavy claims, because they have no data.

And what autistic adults are receiving a formal diagnosis without first self-diagnosing? It's not like we go to the doctor and they notice traits and refer us for a neuropsych eval. The only difference between me with my official dx and a self-dx autistic is that I found an assessor and had money.

Eugenics isn't bad because it's a bad word. It's bad because it leads to the mass death of the socially undesirable.

3. Although I think I see the point OP is trying to make, it's dangerous to simplify historical eugenics and we should never write off present day concerns over gene editing, etc. We should *always* question why we are doing something and explore all the potential ramifications of these decisions.

They did this through things like eugenic marriage laws, better baby contests, and fitter family contests. Some of this is certainly about preventing disease, but most of it is about preserving & supporting white supremacy. Only white protestant babies, for example, could win a better baby contest.

More commonly, American eugenicists believed in what some scholars call "positive eugenics." Not "positive" as in "good," but rather encouraging the "right" people to have more babies and trying to encourage the "right" genetic traits to be passed down.

NOW, it's a pseudoscience because it's been debunked & is no longer mainstream scientific thinking. Calling historical eugenics a pseudoscience lets science & scientists of the past off the hook (Also, PS is more of a modern-day term. We had terms like "quackery" but eugenics was not that)

1. Historically, eugenics was not a pseudoscience. It was *science* Almost every scientist, social scientist, academic, etc. believed in the validity of eugenics. You would have to search far & wide to find a scientist that didn't believe in some form of it. They taught it in college!

Historian of eugenics here. I don't normally like to retweet bad arguments, but this is such a fundamental misunderstanding of eugenics, I think it's important to point out. I don't have time to debunk all of the ways this is inaccurate, but I'll highlight a few things and then recommend some books🧵

If new proposals detailed in an FDA memo are put into place, experts told me it would mean the end of annual flu shots. And end of most vaccines for pregnant people. And maybe the end of updates to pneumonia vaccines. And more.

There is no balance required, you just trust people.
Because disabled people are met routinely with mockery, suspicion, neglect, discrimination and outright hate, we do not feed the ableism machine with more suspicion. If a few people get away with ‘cheating the system’ that’s just how things are.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

I dug into the expanding fight over disability parking placards for pregnant people.

Is it a no-brainer pro-family move or does it make life harder for disabled people? Are those even discrete categories?
Behind the fight over expanding disability parking placards for pregnancy
Supporters call the efforts pro-family. But critics warn that with too few accessible spots already, expanding placards could shut more disabled people, including moms, out of everyday life.

It's always such a disappointment to see that it's not just MAHA that sees autistic people as damaged goods. Anyway, the world is a better place with autistic babies in it, and it would be amazing to see autism causation studies start to screen parents for autistic traits or take family histories.
Scientists studied thousands of children born March 2020-May 2021.

Out of 800+ mothers diagnosed with COVID-19, 16.3% of their babies received a neurodevelopmental diagnosis by 3 years old, compared with 9.7% who weren’t exposed to COVID-19 in utero.

There are more disabled people who are pretending to be healthy so that you don’t judge us or think us incapable than there are healthy people pretending to be disabled. If you find yourself questioning whether someone is really disabled, you’re doing the work of the oppressor. #disability
