That last sentence goes REAL hard
UPDATE: Reached out to the Rev. Hannah Kardon, a United Methodist minister who was there that day and has been active in religious demonstrations at Broadview.

“They are making it clear that they are scared of prayer … it speaks the truth that what they are doing in that building is evil.”

#ASBH2025 overlapping with the #ACR25 presentation on sJIA/Stills/HLH/MAS feels specifically inconvenient for me, a Pediatric Ethics Fellow with sJIA, PID, and a history of undifferentiated HLH/MAS. However, I fear that I may be the only person encountering this problem. 😂

Got to sit next to Prof. Goldberg in this talk.
1. It’s so cool as a student/fellow to meet people you admire on BlueSky and in Academia in real life.
2. Dr. Stramondo, Dr. Cupples, and Dr. Diaz all had insanely amazing presentations. Please go read these skeets.

There's quite a few sessions on disability ethics here at #ASBH2025, and I'm especially excited to be attending the session on "Combating Structural Gaslighting through Disability Narratives" and listening to Joseph Stramondo, from whom I learn much! #Bioethics

Took my lunch outside onto balcony. Ate half my salad before a bird pooped on my head and down my back. Showered in PICU locker room, threw on a donated tshirt. Somehow I wouldn't mind if this happened and it was patient related, but a BIRD?! #Yuck

The Trump regime wants us to forget that the Kent State massacre happened — that pitting the National Guard against American citizens is a recipe for disaster.

There have been a lot of long hard nights at work lately. I've been feeling worn thin. Then last night I got told that a patient's mother remembered me - specifically because I give "the best hugs." Sometimes the little moments make the big ones survivable.

We will continue showing up. We will continue peacefully resisting. We will
will continue caring for each other. We will continue having empathy, compassion, and mercy for one another. We will continue to do the hard work, with our hands, bodies, and hearts. We keep loving anyway.

Everyone I know who works in a public or rural hospital is saying the same thing.
Spoke with someone who works with a public hospital system. His assessment of the effects of the GOP spending bill: “I think this is going to be a very apparent catastrophe, very quickly.”

Saturday cookie dough is chilling. Lemon sugar cookies and jam thumbprints are the order of the day. Thankful for the simple joys.

Sometimes I am struck by the grief of our terrible human ability to look at one another and see anything other than wonder.

Good morning, beloved.

If you do not stand with and fight for others, you will lose your soul.

Today is a great day to overcome evil with good.

Chaplain/Ethicist here to endorse this. I will ALWAYS come debrief with you/the team. Any. Freakin. Time. Day or night. Make that pager buzz, babe.
*Me to the PICU nurses after a code*

Me: What's that thing where we have a meeting and share our feelings?

Nurses: A debrief?

Me: Yes yes we should do that

Purchased because he’s the spitting image of my own dear boy - An undated postcard, probably early 1900’s. Captioned by hand: “This is Horton trying to get Dickins.” Photo captioned, “Ah another bird!” Addressed to someone in Des Moines, IA.

@catsofyore.bsky.social thought you would appreciate.

Getting ready to transition back into the hospital/inpatient setting after two years doing parish/community work. Is it bad that I'm looking forward to cute and comfy scrub pants again?

I'm going to keep repeating it if for no reason other than it helps me to do so:

They have trashed the healthcare service and delivery system. It is incredibly hard to get competent care if you're medically complex.

Kitty Watch Update!
She’s miraculously back! The poor baby seems to be in heat again, and she’s starving, but she’s back! After that cold snap I thought we were too late. Trap will be re-rented tomorrow morning.

We do not pray because it changes God. It changes us. The same way we do not grieve because it changes what has happened. WE change things. Together. Plural. Present Tense. It is right to grieve and to pray in the wake of tragedy. It is a sign of hope. It means we believe that we can still change.
