hard at work making biscuits, listen to that machinery hum!

The paper also draws clear lines between black-and-white and post-truth mindsets and anti-democratic beliefs.

Again, pretty easy to hypothesize that this is the case, but peer reviewed evidence speaks louder than vibes.

My goal is understanding the playbook in order to fight back.

It's obvious to me that the unwavering bombardment of chaos that many face online is, at the very least, known by bad actors to be an effective tool at eliciting anti-democratic beliefs and attitudes.

Connecting the dots here is not all that difficult, the research just backs it up.

Reading a paper on anti-democratic attitudes and guess what the most important factor for folks to have an anti-democratic attitude was...

Perceived breakdown of the social and moral fabric.

The doomscrolling to authoritarianism pipeline is a REAL problem.

I'm not a fan! I actually had a work assignment to determine whether we could use chat GPT at my job... and my conclusion was absolutely fucking not.

They're too afraid to pop the bubble. LLMs are just the latest form of crony capitalism.

I hopped freight for a years, mythology is a good word for it. The past, no matter how horrible it was, and whether we like it or not, is our culture. Trains, from the transcontental railroad, to hobos and the great depression, its part of our culture.

meme'ing AI-slop; Strip District edition
Pittsburgh History Landmarks Foundation (PHLF) put an AI-Slop poster up all over the Strip District of a sad merchant looking down at unsold produce in response to the city wanting to right-size a dangerous speedy two-lane road down to one-lane. I turned it in to a meme, where the sad merchant is "ME". The produce is photos of the poster and "my power bill going up as PHLF throws away organizational credibility making sad reactionary generative AI-slop tape-up posters"

I guess what I'm saying is that all is not lost. It's still there, it's still worth fighting for, and it will require a constant battle to progress and uphold.

Don't let the ideal be corrupted, and don't let them continue to divide us.

The mythological ideal of this country is literally right in front of every single one of its citizens. Imperfect, of course. But we are united by far more than what divides us and that's led to our triumph as Americans over every trail we have faced thus far.

I'm traveling by train today between some of America's greatest small towns and greatest cities. I can't really overstate how much I recommend doing this. At some level it's reconnecting with the mythology of this country, that while problematic in many ways, is still worth fighting for.

I know this could easily offend someone but honestly, if you go to Starbucks when there's a practical local option available I just can't vibe with you.

I'm sorry, only vibe with people that make at least *some* decisions consciously to do the right things.

Shopping local when possible is one.

What I like about these mountains is their proximity, could see every single one I've hiked from this vantage point today. It's really cool to grasp the geography on that scale with your own eyes.

Kristi Noem, while governor of South Dakota, supplemented her roughly $130,000 salary by secretly accepting $80,000 donated to a political nonprofit she was affiliated with, records show.

She never disclosed this income on federal ethics forms.

PA should build a lot more housing so PA doesn’t lose out in reapportionment again in 2030. The number we need to hit: 130,000 more homes above-baseline. That’s the same number Gov Shapiro says we need to hit to dig out of the statewide housing shortage thephiladelphiacitizen.org/the-key-to-p...
The Key To PA’s Power in D.C.?
Reapportionment will cost PA another Congressional seat in 2030 if we don’t stanch our population drain. Could the solution be … more housing?
