It's a small thing but such a relief too: after a few years of drought, it's finally not this summer. Minnows are darting in the creek and the bee balm and yellow coneflowers are blooming in profusion.
Tiny creek lined in bee balm, yellow coneflowers, and lots of other vivid vegetation.

Footsteps in the semi-dark. Smooth skin on water. Swift waves on silver sands singing in a voice too low about a time that is not mine and I hold this moment like a poem in my hands.

Summer’s end. Carried on the gentlest landward breeze: the delicate, sweet scent of cornflowers in the wildflower meadow. The dry, smoky poppy and the subtle aromatic scent of weld mingled with the honeyed dustiness of blooming beach grasses – pure, fragile summer.

It always comes back to a beach towel drying out over a split rail fence and the sound of a small plane going somewhere

In those days, living as we did in the country, without the dubious benefits of radio or television, we had to rely on such primitive forms of amusement as books, quarrelling, parties, and the laughter of our friend.
