Details of the 18th Century woodblock Chinese wallpaper in a bedroom at Ightham Mote a medieval moated mansion near Sevenoaks, Kent, now in the care of the National Trust charity.
The left one shows a heron-like bird standing with long slender neck raised and beak ajar as if calling. The background consists of flowers and trees in a landscape. The right frame is of a spectacular green-plumed bird, sitting on a tree stump with its magnificent tail feathers pointing upwards. Again the background is floral with other birds in flight.

The following is reprinted from a National Trust article.
“Until recently it was not realised that these sinuous bird-and-flower panels were printed, but close observation reveals the tell-tale small breaks in the black lines common to woodblock printing.
The colours and fine details were subsequently added by hand. The carved wooden blocks must have been very large, as the individual sheets, which were printed from a single block, are over two metres tall.
It was considered necessary to employ a metropolitan specialist as the individual sheets had to be carefully fitted together to create a convincing panoramic scheme. Chinese wallpaper also tended to be more expensive than British-made paper, so it must have been a painstaking and nerve-wracking job for the paper-hangers. “
