The Castle Mill on Brandenburg an der Havel’s Cathedral Island boasts 700 years of milling history. Its early-1900s mill and grain storage buildings were gutted by a 2002 fire, then rebuilt and turned into modern apartments with preserved industrial features. The photo centers on the Sighers’ Bridge, an enclosed fourth-floor brick walkway connecting the robust red-brick structures rising from the Havel. Its broad arch, evenly spaced windows, and brick-plaster rhythm create a monumental, Venice-inspired look, now living space under protection, complete with high ceilings and details like the old meal sack chute. The bridge forms a perfect architectural frame for the tranquil Havel: rippling water with a lone rower, green trees, houseboats, and sky beyond. Foreground railings and a wooden pier contrast the heavy masonry with the serene, natural riverscape.

This black-and-white photograph captures the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, showcasing its magnificent Victorian architecture. Designed by Captain Francis Fowke and opened in 1866, this "birdcage" structure was inspired by London's Crystal Palace. The central focus is the soaring, longitudinal glass-and-iron roof that floods the atrium with natural light. The roof structure features a series of elegant, slender cast-iron arches that span the width of the hall. These arches are supported by exceptionally narrow cast-iron pillars, which were an engineering feat at the time, designed to be the thinnest possible while still supporting the massive structure. The roof itself is composed of numerous rectangular panes of glass held in a delicate metal framework, creating a repetitive geometric pattern that draws the eye upward and toward the far end of the gallery. The gallery is multi-storied, with several levels of balconies lining the long sides of the atrium. These balconies feature intricate cast-iron balustrades with decorative motifs, including miniature stilted arches. The verticality of the space is emphasised by the continuous lines of the slender columns rising from the floor to the roof, creating a strong sense of rhythm and symmetry. At the far end of the gallery, the roof curves into a semi-circular, apsidal dome, which is also glazed to match the rest of the ceiling. This rounded end provides a graceful conclusion to the long, rectangular hall. The stark black-and-white treatment of the photo highlights the interplay of light and shadow across the complex metalwork, emphasising the structural elegance and the sense of vast, open space within this historic "cathedral of curiosities".

A view over blooming gorse and heather in a range of reds, browns and greens. This image is from September when the gorse is at its most colourful. A hiking path runs from the left up to the ancient Neolithic cairn. It is estimated to be 5,000 years old and while it has never been excavated it is thought to contain a passage tomb and burial chamber as do many of the cairns dotted around the top of the Dublin hills.

An autumnal view of Talkin Tarn, Talkin Tarn Country Park, Brampton, Cumbria on a bright December day. In the middle of the picture in the shade is a fallen tree resting in the shallow blue waters of the tarn. There are ducks standing on the tree trunk and some in the water close to the tree. The sky above is hazy blue. It is reflected in the still waters of the tarn, as is the fallen tree. There are a few light ripples on the water, some from the movement of the ducks. Talkin Tarn is a kettle-hole lake formed by the immense force of glaciers 18,000 years ago. Moving ice scoured and carved the landscape leaving glacial sand hills and a natural bowl, which filled with water as the ice sheet melted. The name Talkin is derived from the Celtic 'Talcan' meaning brow of a hill. The word 'Tarn' is Norse in origin, 'Tjorn' meaning tear drop or small lake.

Our picture shows the interior of a historic building in Valletta, Malta, viewed from below and looking upward into a central courtyard. The space is tall and enclosed on all sides, with warm, honey coloured stone walls that glow softly under interior lighting. Several levels rise above, each lined with elegant wrought-iron balconies. The railings are highly decorative, filled with swirling, floral patterns that curve and loop in a delicate, lace-like design. The balconies run along the walls and turn corners gracefully, giving the space a sense of flow and continuity. At the very top is a large glass roof made of a grid of metal framing, forming a geometric pattern of triangles and rectangles. Through the glass, the sky is visible in pale blues and purples, suggesting daylight filtering down into the building. A single hanging light fixture is suspended beneath the glass ceiling, appearing small against the height of the space. On one wall, there is an arched window with an ornate stone frame.
