The Storm

Storms always look overwhelming. They fill your field of view. They darken everything. They make you feel like the quiet is about to be taken from you. But notice how the water in this capture remains calm.

A wide view across the calm Irish shoreline of Lough Foyle as a heavy storm approaches, dark layered clouds sweeping low over the water. The lake’s surface remains gently rippled and reflective, while a narrow strip of grassy land and reeds extends from the left into the water. On the distant horizon, the faint blue hills of Donegal sit beneath a break in the clouds, where pale light contrasts with the deep grey mass of rain moving in, creating a dramatic and moody atmosphere.

Photograph taken at the Himalayan Garden near Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire, which has wonderful forest sections. This was taken on the verandah of the Kath Khuni, a small wooden structure traditionally from Himachal Pradesh which borders Tibet. Taken in early autumn, the densely packed trees are in full leaf, with hints of colour change on some. A mixture of evergreens and others. Above is blue sky with white clouds. Diagonally from top left to bottom right, juts the decorative carving of a wooden upright from a small hut. Some of the areas I love the most at the Himalayan Garden are the forest sections - just doing their thing, densely packed and usually away from visitors. There's also a stunning arboretum which is a joy, particularly in spring and autumn.

but all I came up with was this dark, partly lit corridor at Ightham Mote, a medieval moated mansion in Kent. I used something similar before.

In the early 20th Century the owner Mrs Greville used the house for entertaining guests including royalty. The whole house is luxuriously decorated apart from the servants quarters! The gold leaf decor in this room is illuminated by the carefully maintained lighting.

The Boston Opera House (now the Citizens Bank Opera House) was originally designed by Thomas W Lamb, a prominent theater architect, and opened in 1928 as a movie and vaudeville theater. After years of decay, it underwent extensive renovation and reopened in 2004 primarily for theater and ballet productions. The photo is of the lobby with vaulted and arched gold gilded ceilings, painted murals, white Carrara marble pillars, and 12-foot handblown chandeliers. The area is decorated with lighted Christmas trees and garlands. There are people on the stairs and balconies.

Photograph taken inside the Great Hall at Tudor wonder, Speke Hall in Liverpool. Second outing for this photograph but it fits well with today's theme, and who doesn't like gleaming weaponry? Image captured looking up at the large chandelier with candle bulbs and the leaded glass windows beyond in the beautiful wood panelled, double-height room. The chandelier's light reflects as an amber glow on the replica pole axe (halberd) blades of the weaponry displayed over the mantlepiece. Love Speke Hall. Such a great day out and they have brilliant community events, like apple harvesting in autumn and a professionally organised second hand bookshop.
