When you're raised in a magical world but hardly have any magic of your own, a simple muting charm can be pretty impressive, I guess.

WIP: This Side of the Veil

#WIPSnips
“Hi, welcome to Fullcrest Potions! How can I help?” She burst through the beaded curtain and locked eyes with the man in the lobby. Tall, blonde hair, and wearing a black suit, the man oozed arrogance and power. Before he even said a word, he took out a wand from his sleeve and waved it over himself and then pointed it at her. She immediately felt the noise level in the shop drop by ninety percent. The enchanted equipment’s hum was now deafened and the air conditioner running in the humid summer heat was now gone. She was pretty sure even the faint buzz of the electricity was gone as well now. The only sound was his footsteps inching towards her and the sound of the blood rushing in her ears.

This Tumblr post gave me a huge confidence boost:
Tumblr post that reads: kill the imposter syndrome in your head because not only is there someone out there doing it worse than you, they're also using chat gpt to do it

Hey, if you’re embedding a link on a webpage or in an email or in a document (so, anywhere), make the link longer than one word. “Click here for more information” should be hyperlinked — not just the word “here.” This works better for people with small screens, low vision, or imprecise hands.

I am SO JEALOUS of y’all that can plot beforehand. If I plot more than vague notions, I lose interest in it because I felt like most of the fun comes from figuring out the story as I write. Plotting to me means I took the fun out of my fun activity! But I imagine writing would go so much smoother!

TSotV: Elise - wants an easier life. Wants her parents back (not dead-just disappeared to dodge [?], enough money to live, and a shop that’s self sustaining.

MDFYA: William - fueled by revenge and the now dealing with the side effects of it. Also maybe an instant gender change.

I really super enjoy making each character have their own voice. I love thinking about backgrounds and language patterns and the specific slang and inflections each would have. I feel like like it really gives my characters that extra “edge” to become more lifelike!

Plan? What is this plan you speak of? I typically don’t pre-plan anything. I’ll have like a vague notion of specific character traits but nothing is set in stone until the words are on the page. I.e., subject to change at any moment for any reason.

Typically, as a pantser, I think of opening scene logic and plot first, build the characters into it, and then let the characters tell the story from there. So it’s like I put the kindle out for the fire but the fire takes on its own life once lit.

Q1: Do you typically create characters to match the story you want to tell or build your stories based on character(s) already living in your head? #WeeknightWriters

Hallo! Author name’s Nash. I have admittedly done no writing the past three weeks but I just got a LOT more time on my hands since I quit my second job this week (yay!). So, hoping to rest and recover a bit just in time for November! Maybe do light editing until then.

The stupid hospital system I’m stuck in for my doctor’s appointments has been screaming at my for my copay early for my dermatology appointment. So I paid them last payday. Or I thought. They never actually charged my card and is only holding it until I check in. Like why did u have a meltdown then!

No “battery” specifically but I do have a scene about batteries dying in a flashlight. Good enough, I suppose!

WIP: May Death Find You Alive

#WIPSnips
Be careful, young one. I could ask for much greater than I currently am. You're just lucky I currently pity you. Your soul is not one for your body and now blood on your hands. What else could go wrong in your pathetic life?" A waft of stale blood filled his nostrils as his flashlight kicked off.

"Not too keen on finding out, if that's okay." His voice shook as he beat his flashlight with his palm in a panic.

"As I thought." The blood smell faded as his flashlight kicked back on. The darkness that temporarily oozed around him dissipated into a miasma around the circle. "So, do we have a deal? Or shall I take your life instead?"

Whyyyyyyyy can this campus not keep Dr. Pepper in stock in the vending machines?! It I’m paying $2.90 for 20oz, I want the soda I want, not only what the company can keep in stock! $3 is expensive for a soda!

I’m going to try and stretch my finances as far as they go without my second job (which should be easier depending on how many credit cards I can pay off with my bonus check this month. Likely 1 - 1 1/2) and then try and make it until the seasonal rush hits bookstores. From there, who knows man. 🫩

Got an email from a bookshop I applied to on Sunday and they said while they aren’t hiring now, they’re keeping my resume and cover letter on file for when they do start hiring holiday help!

This is good news!!!!

~1PM: resignation received and acknowledged!

The director is trying to pull an exit interview for me so I can discuss what lead me to leaving to a non-biased source. But no guarantees as the college does not typically do that.

But still! After Wednesday, I’m free!
nashbirdwrites.bsky.social
I know the director keeps and checks after hours Teams on her phone. If she doesn’t find me when I get in today, I think I’ll message her and confirm she received the email. I should have turned on read receipt, but did I? Of course not. Noon is probably too probably too early to bother her about it

10AM my time after an 8AM delivery of my resignation letter and no confirmation or acceptance.

How soon is too soon to follow up is the question? I put my last day as the end of this week just to avoid the person who’s emotionally abusing me since she’s OOO this week.

I hope they find the person treating herself like the boss to be worth the amount of tutors they’re going to run through because she can’t coach, critique, or find anything positive to say about anyone else’s work and goes out of her way to find faults.

But she’s full time so she’s “more important”

Just submitted my resignation for my tutoring job on a delay send for 8AM to my director. While I’m very relieved to get out of an extremely toxic environment because of one person, I’m also sad because I was damn good at that job and loved the students. But this is better in the end for me.

Applying left and right to local bookstores to get away from this tutoring job where the lab lead is a power hungry monster who has set themselves as my supervisor and my actual supervisor has let them.

I am tired of coming home crying. A bookstore may be retail but it has to be better.

Feels good to be back on the #WIPSnips train after a week break. Chester (“Mr. Anatham”) is certainly….. a person. Bit socially awkward at times but a damn good actor for the camera. But when he’s comfortable around people, he does let his awkwardness out a bit more.

WIP: This Side of the Veil
The morning crawled by along with the afternoon. By half-past one, she was snacking on a bag of chips she was supposed to keep for the imps, wishing the chips had more salt, and was running through her orders when the bell above the door jingled. Chester stood in the doorway, clad in a three-piece suit with his inside vest unbuttoned and his coat jacket folded over his arm. His shirt sleeves were also rolled up and a thin sheet of sweat coated his forehead above his designer sunglasses.

"Miss Fullcrest." He said as he glanced sideways to peek out of the shop windows. When the coast looked clear, he took off his sunglasses and smiled at her playfully. "Surprised to see me?"

"Mr. Anatham." She batted back. "Yeah, honestly. Don't really expect people at half-past one on a weekday. Much less when they're supposed to be at work."

"I found myself really wanting Indian food and while the Blanks make it okay, I found this local place just down the road that makes it even better. I'm waiting for a text that my order's ready. I'm not disrupting anything am I?" He asked genuinely. She only gave him a knowing look and gestured at the empty lobby.

"Ah, yeah, I guess that's a sign." He took in the area around him and looked back to her before looking off into the distance, clearly thinking for a moment before shrugging and moving topics. "So, you're not going to the alteration shop today, right?"
