Very excieted to have started my career with @pja-betterplaces.bsky.social today as a Graduate Consultant. I look forward to working with the transport team in a number of different ways and on a variety of projects.
A grey building with three company logos on the side. The important one here - the middle one - is PJA's logo, consisting of white text and a white/blue/green circular dot-and-line graphic.

A sump buster for @rantyhighwayman.bsky.social and some interesting use of advisory speed signs for @showmeasign.online
A single lane road with a cycle lane heading towards a bus stop and a sump buster, a petruding metal and concrete lump, in the background. A pair of blue and yellow pedal cycle and bus only signs are in the foreground either side of the road. Below them are 'max speed 10' signs, and a yellow warning sign for the sump buster.

Manchester City Council have lowered the speed limit on the Mancunian Way to 30mph. Or at least they say they have - but creating a 30 limit on a motorway is, legally, almost impossible. So what is the speed limit now? #manchester www.roads.org.uk/blog/schrodi...
Schrödinger’s speed limit
In 2022, Manchester City Council say they reduced the speed limit on the Mancunian Way to 30mph. But it’s not clear if they did. It’s not even clear if they can.

Not sure to what effect it has on Southend traffic. Removing this 'bump' and replacing with a pair of LILOs would reduce braking and accelerating, improving air quality in the local area at least, potentially lessening the rate of collisions too (which appears to be high here and at next junction).

What time is the one in Bristol expected to finish?

Impressive, is this for a diorama or model railway?

Settling in to Reading well, it's a lovely place but the cycle infrastructure is almost non-existent. Shall join the local cycling campaign group at their next meeting to see if I am of any use.
A view of the River Thames at Reading, with the single-tower cable-stayed Christchurch Bridge crossing the calm blue river. A boat is moored on the nearside bank, with another sunk vessel in front of it.

They aren’t just flower beds!!!

Fascinating peak beneath the surface of one of London’s new Cycleways - you can see the complex drainage system that ensures bike lanes help protect the capital from heavy rain & the effects of climate change.

And don’t they look great when they’re finished? 💚🚲👍

While I understand the BBC’s imperative to provide balance in stories, at times it can feel completely ludicrous. Data vs one person’s entirely anecdotal opinion isn’t balance.

Almost 900 fewer people have been injured on Welsh roads since the default speed limit was lowered from 30 to 20mph two years ago

Casualties on 20 to 30mph roads between July and September 2024 were the lowest for the three month-period since records began in 1979

👏 Evidence-led policy
Nearly 900 fewer people injured since 20mph introduction in Wales
Figures show a 25% reduction in the number of injuries on Wales' roads in the past 18 months.

Sadly didn't have the chance to explore much when I was in Longbridge last week. Hopefully I'll be in the area more in future.

For some upcoming training, we've redesigned a client's junction for them to show the art of the possible - a Cycle Optimised Protected Signals (CYCLOPS) junction. There's a trade-off with the floating crossings, but this is a good way to manage the three modes.

An engineering plan of a signalised crossroads. There is a pale red orbital cycle track which passes around 4 pedestrian crossing islands on each corner of the junction which cross the cycle track with zebra crossings. The zebras are offset by about 45 degrees from the signalised crossings of the main road. The north-south arms have two traffic lanes approaching the junction (right and ahead/ left) and one on each of the east-west roads. The north-south cycle tracks have verge buffers and east-west has wide cycle lanes.

Guerilla 20 mph signs have appeared on a road local to me. People are getting fed up with dangerous roads and want a simple intervention that is proven to improve road safety.
A road with two road signs on either side, both with a contraflow bus lane sign and a small 20 mph sign underneath. There is a 20 mph road marking on the ground.

I feel a lot of the time anti-bird measures are more unsightly and problematic than just having birds rest on things.

Hive mind: can anyone give me some examples of an installed DIAGONAL zebra/parallel crossing? UK only.
Thanks 🙏
