It always baffles me that every Dickens TV/movie adaptation is high-toned and costume-y when the guy writes about London like he's Travis Bickle pulling an all-nighter.

That is true. Also true: a lot of those people live in Toronto.

I've had a lot of authors on my podcast admit to being blocked or discouraged or struggling for ideas for their next book, but Guy Vanderhaeghe is the first one to say be might be done for good.

It’s a thrill to see Tim Curry making appearances for the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW 50th anniversary this month after his near-fatal stroke in 2012. He’s still a flirt and an icon 💖

I'm a "glass is half-full" kinda guy, so let's look at the upside of the Riyadh Comedy Festival: We never, ever have to even pretend to take any of these "anti-woke" "free speech warriors" seriously, ever again.

New from me at @opinion.bloomberg.com (gift link):

Will Anti-Woke Comedy Recover From the Riyadh Festival?
Any event that includes comedy’s biggest names is going to attract attention — but the Riyadh Comedy Festival, which kicked off on Sept. 26 and continued through Thursday, is disproving the adage that...

Embarrassed to say I had no idea this book and this author existed until recently. Am now hunting down everything I can find by Sarraute.

Imagine To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, but even more cutting and pitiless.

A hundred per cent. Before he started the anti-trans stuff, I would argue for him doing something a little more subversive than it seems on the surface, but the anti-trans stuff is/was always just surface and dumb and dehumanizing.

I bailed on him for a looong time over the dumb trans jokes and the knee-jerk anti-woke stuff, which was just plain lazy (if you can't make decent jokes about overly woke people, you're not trying). Oh well. I'd rather go see Gary Gulman and Maria Bamford, anyway.

Would be stupid to argue for Burr right now, but I always approached him like one of those authors or musicians who puts out great stuff, but often gets lazy and/or indulges their worst instincts. Being right on the line is what makes his best stuff good, but that means he easily falls over the line

I have long since stopped looking to the people who make things I enjoy for any kind of personal virtue, but in this case, I know his next special will be 40% him mocking his critics using that mewling "lady" voice, so I can't even enjoy the things he makes.

Good point. Presto has chilled drivers out. Though I did recently get kicked off a GO Bus for having a milk crate zip-tied to the back of my bike. No other drivers have ever had a problem with it (there are maybe 15 zip ties on it, so it won't fly off), but this guy literally *screamed* at me.

Right at queen where the bus turns around. To go north, you had to board at the last south facing stop. (Maybe they‘ve fixed that.)

I once transferred to the Lansdowne bus at the wrong stop (the right one was 20 ft away) and the driver turned the bus off, despite acknowledging my transfer was otherwise legit. It was almost midnight. Stand off ensued.
