Eh for me it's just "political intrigue, looming war, dangerously unreliable leadership" describes a good 80% of SFF I've read.

I think it's all part of this narrative that people believed wrong things in the past, but we're better now.

This mode of talking about your experiences and feelings comes from a particular school of thought from a particular, recent culture and time period. If you're writing fantasy and sci-fi, you need to be aware of what other lenses there are and which ones make sense for your setting.

I'd really appreciate if writers these days took a look at their characters doing therapyspeak and whether that's appropriate for their work and their world.

By "therapyspeak" I mean speaking like this: "This is the emotion I'm feeling, and feeling that emotion makes me want to act in a way"

This Project Gutenberg book contains what I assume is an OCR error, but I'm really drawing a blank on what it's supposed to be.
“They
had not a notion how poor people feel, still less poor people poorer
than before—or how they regard the rich who have what they have
lost. They did not understand any huftian feeling—not even the
silliness they called LOVE—a godless, mindless affair,”

Update! These are what remain from the above posts. I will post some more books when I get time.

Thank you to everyone who's bought books so far. I'm really happy to see books from my library going to so many places where I know they'll be enjoyed.

A poster in green ink on off white paper. In the center is a woodcut style illustration of a protester wearing an inflatable frog costume standing up against two ICE agents. The text above and below reads:

She has turned her face to the viewer and looks surprised/frustrated as she holds a wriggling red snake in her mouth. The background is a light peachy pink An illustration of a walking wingless sphinx in profile moving to the right. She has bright red fur with a slightly darker spotted pattern on her back. Her face is pale with dark scleras and bright irises. She has a patch of light fur on her chest and tail An illustration of a red Hippocampus (a mythical creature half horse and half fish) with a pale strip down its body, pale fins, and a pale mane. It is in profile with its neck tucked in towards its body and mouth open. The background is a light peachy pink An illustration of a flying Mothman. Here I am. Once again. I'm out of archaeologists.

We matched 576 groups w/archaeologists, leaving 13 groups unmatched. This brings me pain! We've never run out of scientists like this before. 598 requests for one category is A LOT. But still.

Archaeologists 🥺
