I still bring it up in conversations about ass-backwards (absence of) sex ed, but that falls less under nostalgia and more under recognizing Florida's general value as a cautionary tale.

When Cuomo talks about rebuilding on the same site, what he's actually promoting is the isolation and dehumanization of incarcerated people, and a degree of spatial insulation that allows abuse to continue unseen.

Even setting aside all the other atrocities of Rikers Island, its location *alone* is inhumane and indefensible.

I live in the same borough, and it takes me over two hours each way to get to and from Rikers via public transit.

It is an incredibly, inherently isolated and isolating location. It keeps the carceral system and the people caught in it outside of casual view or community access.

Right now, it is an absurd and time-consuming rigmarole for a kid to visit a parent incarcerated on Rikers. They will likely have to miss school; they will likely be there until fuck o'clock at night; and there's a decent chance that DESPITE doing both of those, they won't actually get a visit.
