My first #BirdOfTheDay entry, for today’s theme of #ShortBeaks: this redpoll, sporting a short-but-mighty beak. I never hesitate to dole out props for these tough little birds, who come to Manitoba to spend the winter. #birds

📸 Cactus wrens are adept architects, constructing bulky, football-shaped nests from grasses, twigs, and feathers, often tucked securely into the dense, spiny structure of cacti or Joshua Trees. Nest not pictured.

Because I haven't found it yet. 🐦🌵🧐

The @aba.org has named the Horned Lark its Bird of the Year for 2026. I don't get to see them very often here but it's a great choice! #birds #birdoftheyear #hornedlark #HOLA

I wanted pork bones for the stock I made to cook beans so I took them from some country ribs I had. Now I’m braising those country ribs with apples and onions and garlic and some of the stock. A perfect circle. 👀😂🍽️🍜

So I let all that cook down for a while… a few hours later… added some more water and let it simmer some more… then I pulled out all the veg n bones n such and strained it thru fine mesh and cheesecloth into deli containers. And those are my Anasazi beans. I don’t do black eyed peas. 🍽️🍜 HNY 🥳

Making the stock! Making the stock! 🎶👀😂 Since this stock is for beans and greens both, I decided to add some dried New Mexico peppers and a couple jalapenos to it for a little extra kick! rest of the ingredients in the alt. 🍜🍽️

Lookin back, One of the neatest things I did this summer was capture this video. It is basically unedited except for me slowing it down a little to try and match the music… which didn’t work. 😂 To the 100 or so people that liked or commented on it. Thanks. #birds

The choose your own adventure Spinach Artichoke Dip has been mixed up and stored. We’ll figure out how much to cook up tomorrow at band practice. It really doesn’t carry over super well after it’s cooked. 🍽️🍜

Beef loin scraps stock reduction. I started with a quart of store bought beef stock, some onion, garlic, and better than bouillon. 👀 that goes in the fridge and tomorrow or Friday I’ll pull the fat off the reduction and use that to baste the filets as they cook. The sauce will get red wine and 🧈 🍜🍽️

There’s only gonna be 3 of us for dinner on Friday but 3 filets was nearly a $hundy and the whole loin was $145. Had to go there. 😂🍽️🍜
