The central stone circle of the Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The stones were erected some 5000 years ago and form part of a wonderful megalithic landscape, with several other stone circles nearby.

I'm reading The First Emancipator: The Forgotten Story of Robert Carter, the Founding Father Who Freed His Slaves by Andrew Levy (NY: Random House, 2005). Neighbor and friend of famed Virginian Founders, he was able to do what they believed could not be done. He freed almost 500 people in his life.

Several African American soldiers & sailors received Medals of Honor for bravery in the Spanish American War. Among them was Captain Edward Baker who rescued a drowning soldier under heavy fire. Baker was the grandfather of the legendary musician Dexter Gordon.
