Dmitri Mendeleev was born #OTD (8 Feb) in 1834. He's known for recognising periodic patterns in the properties of elements, using these to predict the properties of undiscovered elements. And, of course, the periodic table! wp.me/p4aPLT-8UU

Holy shit, this is exceptional.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

A newborn and the walking dead - astrophysics version!

Bright spot with clumpy jets is a newborn protostar (Ve 7-27).

Yellow-green blob to its left is a neutron star (CXOU J085201.4-461753).

The circle of cosmic life!

Chien-Shiung Wu, who obtained experimental proof of parity violation in weak nuclear decay, was born #OTD in 1912.

Her 1956 experiment involving the decay of Cobalt-60 confirmed that the weak interaction does not respect what many had assumed was a fundamental symmetry of nature. 🧪 👩‍🔬 ⚛️

As you watch this time-lapse of a storm rolling over Pondicherry, India by Karthik Easvur, you may spot a sort of rolling wave called an ARCUS or SHELF cloud.

It forms as the storm's downdraft, along the leading edge of the moving storm, forces warmer, moist surface air up unto a horizontal 'roll'.

I was heading to downtown Wilmington, NC which is along the Cape Fear river. Spotted a bright rainbow-ish spot a little ways to the right of the setting sun and was pretty sure it was a Sundog optical phenomenon. Hustled down to the River front saw this beautiful sight. #WX #NCwx #sundog

Tonight (Jan. 30), the waxing gibbous Moon will be near Jupiter all night. If you have a clear sky, step outside and have a look. The cold air and beauty of the night sky will do you good! SkySafari rendering. #astronomy

Not all rings are forged in fantasy, my precious!

For astronomers, they are found in space. This image shows debris discs captured by ALMA around stars. The two at the top-right told astronomers something very interesting. Find out what here: https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2603a/

When you work in a science lab you can often be called a Lab Rat. Most people wear it as a badge of pride.
I came across this small zippered bag on Amazon as a Haul penny day deal and couldn’t resist. 😁
Will use it to carry small tools for my trips to my local makerspace. #chemsky
