I am far more impressed with someone who spends hours to make a badly drawn illustration of a house than I am with someone who had an image generator spit out a theoretically better looking one, because the former actually tried something. The former made an attempt, and made decisions, and if I asked them about it they could tell me why they used this color or added that window. They may even be able to tell me what they would do differently next time to make it look nicer. I could have a conversation with them. The latter pressed a button, and there is very little one can say about that.

I finished the entire BLOPS 7 campaign, asked for a refund and Valve granted it to me.

I wrote: "The game constantly utilized AI generated options that were not present in the marketing for the game as well as videos and screenshots of the material."

This is bad and dumb and scary, but I also think it’s important to understand it in the context of Disney’s revenue falling below expectations last quarter. “Talking” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, feels like a way to try and save face with investors more than anything

It’s more than just being incapable of media literacy. There has been a concerted push against media literacy in no small part because those with power find it troublesome to their interests

Many mourn and crack jokes about how we are in the midst of a media literacy crisis. I think this is both a structural and a cultural issue. Structural in that our current Internet landscape, ruled by algorithms as it is, often punishes more substantive or in-depth takes and posts in favor of Content that can easily fit into whatever the current trend is. And cultural in that it is often looked down on to think too deeply about the current state of art. "It's just a movie." "It's only a book." Certainly the major outlets encourage this, where art is to be seen more as products to consume, stripped down to component parts that can be mass produced and assembled for maximum efficiency and profit. The result is a superficial engagement, an endless parade of " Ending Explained!"-esque videos and posts designed to win the SEO and algorithm games, or attempts to offer a shockingly contrarian take that requires one to ignore the text and/or subtext of the media in question. Our actual engagement with these pieces has broken down. It is NOT helped by the push to incorporate generative Al into everything, continuously spitting out pale imitations and reiterations of what others have done. We are losing what inspires our humanity.

Reading @markzdanielewski.bsky.social’s Tom’s Crossing. I feel a lot’s been made about there not being a “gimmick” like his other books but that isn’t right. The ways he utilized fonts and page layouts were never gimmicks IMO, but intentional ways to pull readers into a particular frame of mind

It's one thing if you don't know or just made a mistake. No need to breathe down someones neck b/c its harder to tell nowadays.

But if you do know (ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO KNOW) even if you're posting it to make fun of it or sharing it unironically... consider not doing that.

They are also intentionally conflating machine-learning and generative AI slop to confuse and try to make GenAI seem necessary. Google Maps traffic stuff is machine learning, not GenAI, for example. Auto-correct is too. Don't let them make you lose the thread. GenAI slop is slop.
