Are there enough of us around to really influence language use?.. maybe among neopronoun users ig. Reminds me of the old joke that a traditional Sámi family includes a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, and a social anthropologist

Lol at the thought of Cypher as a replacement level conlanger

This is a whole other obsession of mine btw, someday-maybe I will start working on x, where cultural anthropology : linguistic anthropology :: Le Guin _Always Going Home_ : x. Any conlang has syntax, I want one with folklore

My family escaped Ukraine from the pogroms and were lucky enough to escape to the US.

They took my family in — we had nothing and offered nothing, but a desire to get ahead and be free while being safe.

This is a country of immigrants, and we should be honoring that history.

My great grandparents: refugees from state backed ethnic terror. Grandfather: Princeton, Harvard Law, US Army, to find "we don't hire Jews." Grandmother: HIAS social worker. Their legacy: I teach, work for migrants, DC statehood

The networks Stephen Miller intends to dismantle are "criminal justice reformers." Law enforcement is so thoroughly politicized to the right, they won't even push against this.
When you vote for a candidate you are voting not just for a person but for an entire organization. A vast stricture that is employed below, beneath, above and around them.

So when you vote to elect any Democrat you are putting to work an entire governing system: “criminal justice” advocates who will work relentlessly to keep monsters out of prison, officials charged with publicly safety who will instead zealously dismantle it, immigrant lawyers and activists who will work tirelessly to deluge your city with migrants and “refugees”, educators who will indoctrinate your children to hate themselves and their heritage, bureaucrats who are true-believing marxist radicals running the machinery of government, DEI zealots to enforce their agenda at every agency and every business they can extort, regulators to extract the last drop of productivity out of the economy to enrich leftist NGOs, leftist lawyers and leftist community organizers, and a government staffed at every level by those who lack the skill or vision to build anything but relish the opportunity to unravel everything that makes society beautiful, sacred and whole.

Reminds me of the dude who went to Italy and had trouble making himself understood, he didn't know Italian so he tried the Latin he remembered from Catholic school, and the Italian guy responds, ... my man, how long has it been since last time you were here?

This is a great piece, but regarding "explicitly vowing to unleash the power of the American state on a vast, inchoate ideological group," isn't "the Global War on Terror" precisely that? Not a nitpick — given violence abroad + foreign-ization of dissenters at home, this is where it goes
I’m unaware of any other recent president explicitly vowing to unleash the power of the American state on a vast, inchoate ideological group in quite this way.

To *actually* reduce crime, DC needs ICE to stop kidnapping people, NPS to stop driving recklessly in high-speed chases, our chief prosecutor to be accountable to the people who live here, and residents to trust that police will protect them, not deport them (100% with you on addressing root causes)

Outside of a red brick building, a yard sign is stuck in the grass. The text on the sign, in bold white text on a black background: ICE KIDNAPPED A COMMUNITY MEMBER HERE

This was the most dangerous thing for DC residents as of three days ago: because of record long periods of dangerously high humidity, plus price increases caused by demand from data centers, my last two months of electric bills totaled $741.12

I'm a linguistic anthropologist so I imagine standards are pretty similar. I'm always looking for ways to stay in scholarly community other than being a faculty member. I was invited to be a section editor but when I explained what I would need to be able to do the job, they rescinded the offer

One problem is that academia trains people in all the required skills, but once we leave, we become invisible. I'm a nonprofit professional, long term unemployed so I have time to help, have a PhD and a handful of peer reviewed publications, and I get maybe one review request every 3–5 years
