Every once in a while I get a reminder of how many friends I have who used to be public educators. People who would now be mid career, leaders in their schools. People who are amazing, gifted educators. It's just another reminder of how much we've divested from public education.

Teacher retention improves student academic performance. Full stop.

Moreover, Alaska's teachers have told us a significant driver to them leaving is the leadership pipeline.

So...it's not our teachers or principals who are failing...it's the state. #payeducatorsmore
Interesting. "In 2024, principals left schools at a higher rate than teachers in communities outside of cities. But the opposite is true for urban schools, where about 30% of teachers left as opposed to 21% of principals."
“We’re seeing just a fairly steady, consistent upward trend,” Dayna DeFeo, director of the Center for Alaska Education Policy Research, said. “We’re going to see this pattern no matter how we splice the data.”

It's well worth reading. Even more worth doing something about.
I spent more than a year and half crawling through, under, over and around rural public school buildings in Alaska's rural communities. I found a serious public health and safety crisis that's heavily impacting Alaska's Indigenous students. Check out my series: www.propublica.org/people/emily...

Their tax rate has been cut FIVE times in the last 25 years.

They are paying more because their INCOME has increased astronomically, where the income of the bottom half has

Trump, Musk, and the GOP killed hundreds of thousands of kids around the world.

That should be a major story and talking point.

They cut USAID to "save" from "waste," but gave 40 billion to Argentina and threw a Great Gatsby party and let Kash Patel burn our money for his honeypot GF.

AK's Education Department is a "hands-off landlord." The agency owns nearly half of about 120 rural schools statewide. Inside, I've found failing fire alarms, faulty foundations, toxic leaks & raw sewage. Now the state wants rural districts to own those buildings. www.propublica.org/article/alas...
