STOP AIRPORT EXPANSION

We are petitioning the government to stop all airport expansion across the UK. Please help us tell our politicians that we don't want more noise and emissions.

Airports are big enough. Sign the petition ✍️ and share! petition.parliament.uk/petitions/71...
Blue and green background. Text says, stop airport expansion. Help us tell the government we don't want expansion at any UK airport, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. Sign the petition.

Who's going to tell the aviation industry?

Claims we can expand aviation massively and still avoid climate breakdown are based on carbon offsetting.* Which as people have been pointing out for decades, doesn't work.

The emissions of 100,000 extra flights a year can't be magicked away by so-called 'sustainable' aviation fuel. Yet somehow our politicians think we can still hit our climate targets at the same time as expanding airports.

Our petition to stop airport expansion is still live 👇
Gatwick airport second runway approved by transport secretary
There has been strong opposition against the airport wanting to use its northern runway.

Yet another piece of research which makes it harder to claim that 'sustainable' aviation fuels are the magic solution to allow expansion of aviation without damaging our climate targets.

(clearly it will be completely ignored by government)
noairportexp.bsky.social
This is important - there are huge questions over the supply (and sustainability) of 'sustainable' aviation fuels.

They emit the same as conventional fuel when burned, AND aviation has a hidden climate impact from releasing water vapour and other emissions at altitude, often ignored.

Leaving out non-CO2 from lifecycle assessments means that SAF's benefits in reducing CO2 emissions are overstated, say academics at Delft University. 1/3

There are million excellent reasons to conserve and restore forests, and increase forest cover

But when it comes to mitigating climate change, there is no alternative but to stop burning fossil fuels

The achievable carbon uptake from planting trees is much lower than previous estimates, and even lower than many nations have committed to. New paper by Wang et al. in Science. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... 🧪🌏🌳🌲🌐
Fig. 3. Estimated mitigation potential from forestation varies with land availability assumptions. (A) Global and regional ecosystem carbon sequestration. BA19 (10), GR17 (8), and Qin24 (24) refer to respective assumptions of land potentially available for forestation. The “committed” assumption considers only national commitments, and “achievable” shows currently achievable land limited by availability defined in Qin24 (see materials and methods section M3). (B) The currently achievable mitigation potential varies among countries and income groups. Country-specific data are available in data S3 (24). Country codes and corresponding income groups can be found in table S6.

⚖️Are countries legally on the hook for including non-CO2 emissions from aviation in their climate plans?

A legal analysis conducted at the request of T&E and @opportunitygreen.org says YES.

But not one country has done this so far.

A reminder re Heathrow mega-expansion plans:

1. Airport tarmac is not economic growth fairy dust
2. Massive aviation expansion is not compatible with our climate targets
3. No, 'sustainable' aviation fuels won't make much difference. Maths.

Heathrow mega-expansion (adding what would effectively be the country's second biggest airport right next to its largest) would wreck our climate targets and harm local communities.

A positive take on Labour and climate overall - but it notes "Labour's claims airport expansion is compatible with net zero goals are reliant on such thermo-nuclear levels of techno-optimism that they border on magical thinking."

We'd argue that this is a fatal blow to their climate credibility!
How climate action provided one of the few bright spots for Labour's first year in office
The consensus is the Labour government has had a disappointing year, but when it comes to the green economy real progress has been made

Jet fuel made from CO2 and water - genuinely low carbon but "prohibitively expensive", probably decades away from becoming commercially viable and requires huge amounts of renewable electricity.
