Because they saw him as exceptional. I mean that quite literally; despite all their talk and their facade of disgust, in their minds they were willing to make an exception for him. Integrity is measured in exceptions: what and for whom you will make them, and what and for whom you will not.
So much mainstream reporting on Epstein focused on whether individuals have been "accused of wrongdoing" and very little on why all these celebs and politicians didn't have a problem hanging out with a known sexual abuser of children.
