After liking this post and reading the linked paper, I was keen to see if I'm missing these features in outcrops. Tooling around some basalt flows along Kona Coast in Hawaii today (Shoreline Park, just west of Kealakekua)...well, yep! Will be keeping my eye peeled for these in older flows in AZ!
Photo of the an outcrop of dark gray vesicular basalt, exhibiting fracture patterns of two natural explosion structures. The structures look like cavities surrounded by radially-oriented fractures. My sandaled foot is also shown, for scale.

Was a lively talk Wednesday by UC Berkeley's Lung Chan on his "natural explosion structures" -- see the paper in J. Struc. Geol. at www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

This is horrifying and yet another reminder of why we can't abandon fossil fuels quickly enough.

The Elwha River is a triumph of restoration, with salmon returning after over a century's absence since major dam removals 12 years ago. The spill is on a tributary 1.5 miles from the river's main stem.

A fuel tanker crashed off Highway 101 on Friday and began leaking fuel into a major tributary for salmon, trout and the water supply for Port Angeles. It's a pretty devastating spill.

Tanker crashes, spills fuel into Elwha tributary near Port Angeles
A fuel tanker truck went off Highway 101 into Indian Creek, a tributary of the Elwha River, on Friday morning.

Great new open access paper - “Newly Identified Creeping Strand of the Concord Fault, San Francisco Bay Area”.

I was able to go check out the area with the authors last summer. Super neat!

Our 2009 Gold Country field trip passed the rock shop west of Mariposa, where the field trip leader said he'd found a small gold nugget in the roadcut to the east. A recent visitor found no gold but lots of beautiful rocks. ncgeolsoc.org/past-field-t...
Slate of the Mariposa Formation features relict sedimentary structures plus crosscutting quartz veins, neither visible at this spot along Hwy 140.

Our June speaker, from the FORGE geothermal project in Utah, will give us lots of background on the exciting developments in this thread.

What does the future of enhanced geothermal power generation look like?

Fervo offered an update to partners and investors at its #capeconnect event today, showcasing progress on its 100MW Cape Station project in UT.

I tagged along and I learned a lot. Some highlights based on my notes follow… 🔌💡

See our fall lineup of speakers at ncgeolsoc.org

From Sept to Nov we'll learn about a new kind of explosion structure, what sea-level rise means for groundwater, and what an odd quake in 1954 looks like from today's science.

UC Davis grad student Ryan Lynch stands by his poster "Active Faulting in the Klamath Mountains Revealed by Lidar Data," a research project NCGS supported with a $2000 Richard Chambers Memorial Scholarship this year to underwrite more fieldwork and sample collecting.
