The biggest single reason to push my “expanding puddle” ideas for Amtrak NEC growth is to create fare box funded shareable improvements to rural tracks from DC & New Haven CT & north of Boston.

Improving DC-Cleveland-Toledo upgrades track will happen faster with my idea, helping DC-Chicago route.

Why add shorter service to existing Amtrak lines?

Generally these are projects so ready, no shovels likely required, slashing risks.

Bottle necks, eg Amtrak tunnels NYC-NJ may require massive investment but success there will ripple outward across many states ME VT NH PA WV OH VA NC with my ideas.

Why are profits crucial for Amtrak expansions? It makes it extremely difficult for GOP to end my proposed new Amtrak services. Every mode of transport is subsidized by Federal policy, but Amtrak the least.

Why is Amtrak expansion crucial? It expands opportunity for many people, so faster growth.

Pittsburgh & Cleveland are major cities with pro sports teams, near ski slopes between DC & Pittsburgh, all major draws for rail from Northeast NEC riders, & much closer to DC than Charlotte NC’s pro teams.

I deliberately use the 457mi NEC Boston-NYC-DC corridor in my plans, to also effectively market based subsidize the routes as much as possible, & then add ~300 runs onward, on existing Amtrak routes, to add not just trains per day, but crucial single seat rides to grow the Amtrak ridership market.

49 USC § 24102 7(c) defines “long division” Amtrak allowed federal $. I use 750 mile rule to qualify lines for subsidy, but I do NOT assume my ideas will qualify every year. At best, they might only get one time grants for new rolling stock or upgrades to tracks or stations.

Thanks I was legit curious. I don't know the map/routes well. If daily to CHI already uses CLE/TOL track, are you suggesting to add stops there or add frequency? Curious why CLE/TOL is more profitable than the Charlotte routes? Is it mainly pop density?
