Seems unnecessarily complicated & euro/us centric. Basically a way to keep players like Trin while giving low ambition clubs an out on not spending more.
SOURCES: The #NWSL board has voted to approve a new star player fund—internally called "High Impact Player"—to allow teams to spend up to $1M over the cap with a much smaller cap hit for players who meet criteria.

Crucially: A change affecting the cap requires NWSLPA consultation. On @espn.com:

The NWSL's Board of Governors has approved a new roster mechanism to pay select star players above and beyond the current salary cap, multiple sources confirmed to ESPN.

Raise your hand if you just realized that the NWSL CBA has side letter of agreements at the bottom that keep being added as the league and NWSLPA agree on amendments to the CBA

I know the goal is to keep players in the nwsl but i‘m not sure what the league is proposing is the best way. It ultimately gives the league a lot more power and adds another cap. There’s already a salary cap, Net Transfer Cap/ fee, and now a HIP cap/ limits.

I don’t understand why the league is like this. It’s the endless rules like Allocation, Intra league transfers, FAM etc It could all be so much easier. If a club deems a player worthy of a bigger contract why is that not their decision? It’s their money that pays the salary.
I understand how Ballon d'Or voting could be involved in the new High Impact Player system, but will also be irritated by it every day for as long as the system would be in place.

Ballon d'Or voting is consistently, egregiously flawed when it comes to NWSL, due to its nomination process.

Trust the league to do the most complicated thing instead of just raising the cap or getting a few DP players. The fact that this has a cap just means it will be outdated in a little while.

About time. The league was being stubborn about this. It was either change the cap significantly/ DP rule or lose talent. Now this has to be for several players per team 3 or 4 hopefully.
NEWS: The #NWSL board is voting on a proposal that would allow teams to pay top players beyond the current salary cap but with limits, w/the hope that it's a solution for Trinity Rodman and other stars. Proposal still needs to pass. Details (so far) on @espn.com 👇

It's pretty galling that the NWSL will *always* tout any example of unprecedented growth, no matter how insignificant or narrowly defined, and then say the revenue growth expectations needed here have no precedent.

Laura Harvey says she is in "ongoing discussions" to sign a contract extension with the Seattle Reign. She is out of contract on the 31st Dec.

GM Lesle Gallimore says that they will come to the media "when they have news" and adds an acknowledgement of the major contribution Harvey has made. #NWSL

3 days of a tournament = 2 million dollars
NWSL SALARY CAP = 3.5 million
Some wave players made more playing in the 3 day tournament than their nwsl salary.

The league is still in the "we have to just survive a couple more years" mindset from the first years of the league. I get it. I was there. But we're like, a decade older than either of the previous leagues. Its time for us to go to a thrive mindset instead of survive.

Almost 400 million in expansion fees since 2023. This league is what it is because of the players. And they should be compensated accordingly
A league spokesperson sent a statement: “Our goal is to ensure that the very best players in the world, including Trinity, continue to call this league home. We will do everything we can, utilizing every lever available within our rules to keep Trinity Rodman here."

So how does Berman just get to ignore the CBA? If this compliant with the CBA
December 4, 2025 at 4:09 AM
The league can’t deny this if a team has space in the cap. There’s technically nothing stopping teams from doing this. The problem here is that Washington seems to be over the cap. The cheap owners and by extension Berman don’t seem to want a DP rule or a significant cap increase.

Kansas City Current’s estimated annual revenue is bigger than Barcelona & Chelsea combined.
