This is a lose-lose for the ownership. Even if they win this fight they will lose in public opinion. It's win-win for Burke in that even if she loses it makes it seems like she is actually willing to fight for players, but this quote doesn't mirror her attitude towards smaller name players.
The NWSLPA has filed a grievance with the NWSL on behalf of Trinity Rodman, arguing the league violated at least five different sections of the current collective bargaining agreement when it vetoed a proposed four-year, multi-million dollar deal between Rodman and the Washington Spirit.

My guess is this is at least part of if not the whole reason behind what put the kibosh on the contract. You can't agree to something you don't yet have. Sounds like those last two years on the contract rely on the salary cap increasing due to an as yet to be determined media revenue.

I dont know how Berman thinks they will be able to keep Rodman without allowing the Spirit to blur the line on the salary cap, but this was actually the right call which she probably only made because she has the other owners to answer to as well who aren't willing to spend the type of cash Kang is.

Not that anyone really cares but I was told in January that the club would start sending stuff like this on embargo so media wouldn’t be thrown off. That hasn’t happened other than Taylor Malham’s extension, which they delayed the announcement for at least twice
