East Bay land use politics during the day, charging OB in the dawn

My earnest advice to white guys with degrees who are struggling to make it in academia or journalism is that instead of blaming Black people you should consider pivoting to the public sector.

I dont fully understand non-profit affordable housers' gripe with developers building low cost units during a lull in market-rate construction... also interesting to see a Peskin endorsed BOS candidate end up at a East Bay non-profit houser

No matter how you slice it, US police officers are safer on the job and paid waaaaay more than other countries' police despite doing a…less than stellar job

The question isn't more police vs. less police. It's why are US police paid so much while doing such little and such poor police work?

Why is Mayor Lurie issuing an Executive Directive to establish a Street Safety workgroup when there is already a Vision Zero Committee led by MTA?

Addressing traffic fatalities is the third rail of CA politics
Over the next three hours, legislators asked instead about homeless encampments along roadways, gas tax revenue and planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

It was the first informational hearing they’d held on the transportation system in more than a decade.

Watching a triple bill with my dad when I was ten: A Simple Plan, October Sky, and Saving Private Ryan (in that order)
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

@mayor.lacity.gov would rather spend more money endangering more lives then actually implement voter approved safety measures. Never has a city done so little with so many resources...
Continued: “Now they’re doing the opposite. Small chunks. I wouldn’t be surprised if their repaving cost per square foot is going up 25-50% with all these tiny patches. [BSS is] choosing to do their job inefficiently to avoid PROWAG/HLA”

Another entry in the "how far will LA go to NOT make streets safer" files.
Jonathan Hale was arrested by LAPD today for painting a crosswalk, even as the city of Los Angeles funnels more money to LAPD and does gymnastics to avoid implementing HLA.

@mayor.lacity.gov, Jonny has made repeated attempts to meet with your office and has been iced out. Angelenos deserve better.

Glad to see the interim S.F. police chief acknowledge how “incredible” it is for SFPD to be “short staffed” yet crime drops dramatically. Almost as if there’s more to crime prevention than larger PD budgets sfstandard.com/2025/12/03/s...

New post: a week of hectic back and forth with fire officials and city council over Berkeley street festivals brings out into the open a conflict in city halls across USA. Fire depts opposition to traffic calming and safety measures. Is there a solution?

The Fire Department vs. Traffic Safety Advocates
Street safety advocates are butting heads with fire officials. Swift fire response does not have to come at the cost of lives on the roadway.

Albany's Trans Comm is hearing a presentation on the planned improvements to the Kains Ave bikeway: albanyca.primegov.com/viewer/previ...

@prinzrob.bsky.social Can the Marin cycle track be extended eastbound across SPA all the way to Kains? The clunky two-phase turn leaves a lot to be desired.

It’s perfect that Marin is giving this absurd example of impact fees ahead of a legislative session where housing policy is aiming to address non-zoning issues just like this: @buffywicks.bsky.social @scottwiener.bsky.social @caspeakerrivas.bsky.social
Corte Madera, Marin adopted fire protection impact fees via urgency ordinance ahead of new housing applications. Ordinance includes fee reductions for affordable homes.

The mayor expressed concerns re waiving impact fees for 100% affordable homes “housing we don’t necessarily want to encourage.”
