Mom.
Scientist. Explorer. Ocean advocate.

I study microbial dynamics in the ocean using HOVs, ROVs, and cutting edge tech. ❤️ extreme environments; seek to understand biological complexity and resilience.
Everyone I know is in a panic state. Working to save what we have spent years building.

Unless there is a rapid 180, the damage will take decades to recover from.

- herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis
- shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease

My quote of the day

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

As much as everyone shits on biotech, it’s where you go first when your doctor says there’s not a treatment.

This is a BIG BAD THING.
This is troubling for multiple reasons, but one big one is companies won’t want to invest in R&D and clinical trials if they don’t think they can get a fair regulatory review—which is at the end of a long and extremely expensive process.

When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.

Don’t listen to anyone trying to suggest the FY2026 budget bill saved science.

The bill has some wins (and I am grateful to those you worked with and from within Congress for those wins).

We have a lot of work to do before we rest.

Researchers reported the first measured sea temperature from a snowball Earth episode: −15°C. If this figure holds up, it will be the coldest measured sea temperature in Earth’s history.
