Ath-enna Before time Before myth Before legend You came to me in dreams Not as Hellenistic monster But praised for your wisdom And remembered with long dreadlocks Your form tall Slender Powerful Your skin reflecting no visible light So it seemed a living veil of void Covered your shapely hips Elegant limbs And supple hands Seducing you was magic Dancing through dense tangled forests In open fields And across whole bodies of water Speaking either a language I no longer remember Or none at all And when your coy Shy mask fell away You lay back on salt flats Creating contrast my tongue Eyes And fingertips Were quick to appreciate Until your spine arched And your voice stirred the clouds above Now Drawn from sleep By this time By this day I find my heart Mind and body In unusual agreement That each will help find the path Across the sundial So if the myths are true And not simply a ploy to disguise your origins I would find Atlas Grasp his massive shoulders Beg my Mistress for the strength of the Winter winds And spin him backward myself To meet first Zeus Then Perseus With a warm kiss And a cold blade Long before they ever dare set foot Near you and your sleeping sisters

They continued playing way past the ballad Ashrah had performed for the music spirits. At one point, Nitara offered her hand, and Ashrah put her erhu aside to dance with her beloved. Across the spacious room they spun and whirled, and Askaly clapped and howled in approval before snatching Xiuying and Sareena and bringing them into the dance as well. Deep into the night they played music and danced and sang and laughed and exchanged stories. And Ashrah’s soul brimmed with the meaning of Aryliys: gratitude. Not for wings, for she did not have those, but she had something far better: this family she had been so fortunate to find and be welcomed into.

It didn’t mask the tears rolling down her face. “Why am I doing this to myself?” “Doing what?” Pat felt like she should hug her, but the truck made it awkward. “Agonising over hurting a man’s feelings? If this was the state of things, maybe it was too much to hope for that the things she’d come for were still intact. But maybe her new sense could help her answer that question? Beats rummaging around in the dark till Ahroun gets back. She let the ruined book drift back into the box and exhaled slowly, trying to reach that calm detached place. The color drained, and a bright red flare of light popped into view almost immediately, the hum of it a familiar set of twin voices. Veristor and Invicta, upstairs. A third energy dimly glowed with golden light from the ground floor bathroom. Her books. Ahroun must have found her weapons and locked them in the room the family used as the armory. But he hadn’t found - or hadn’t bothered with - her books. Was she seriously this lucky? The colors dispersed and she got to her feet, making a beeline for the bathroom.
