Mouth wide to minimise the sound of her breathing. The subtle curl of her toes digging into the mattress. Kerr froze, a chill speeding to her heart. Lusa embarrassed easily. She would die if she found out Kerr knew what she was doing. If she learned Kerr was watching her. But she couldn’t not watch. Fuck. If she’d known Lusa liked her this much, she wouldn’t have stopped with a kiss. And with so little time, she cursed herself for wasting it.

But after three rounds, she finally succumbed to exhaustion. It's now 8:29 a.m. and this is the latest I've been in bed since that hot summer day back in Florida when I told Beth I was quitting. The day that changed everything. The day that set me and Freja on the path to... this. Her arm is still draped over my naked body. The room is cold, but her body is warm, inviting, and her breath on the back of my neck is more refreshing than the chill from a newly frozen pond. There is nowhere in the world I'd rather be, because last night was everything I could have ever hoped for. Beth was right, I am dumb. Dumb for not having told Freja how I felt about her weeks ago. All I want to do is stay with her all day.

Fingers encircle her own and the touch takes her to paradise. When she opened her eyes, it took her a moment to register where she was. The dingy tile, the musty carpet, the flickering yellow bulbs of the kitchen, all seemed so out of place. Then she remembered, and the conflicting wave of emotion hit her like a brick. “Nat? No breeze this time either, no open window. Her captors had obviously worked out how she had escaped last time. That just meant that she had to find a different way out.

We watched Thyllis strut towards the bar, approaching an Aiksonosk woman a few years older than me. The woman sat coiled around her stool, idly sipping a colourful drink. Like all Aiksonosk, her segmented exoskeleton protected a long, flat body several strides long, supported by many short legs. Unlike most, this one had painted her exoskeleton in a vivid pattern of yellow flowers. The woman brightened upon seeing Thyllis and retracted her proboscis from the now-empty glass. Thyllis waved the bartender over. Clarke’s eyes bulged. “How do you think she does that?” Anento mused. “Thyllis?” Captain said. “She's just good with women.” “That’s what I’m saying,” Anento said. “Women. That's her type. Not tall Dodishodan moms who work out. Not Tilnar. Not bipeds. Women.” “Oh, that,” Captain said. “Oh, that,” Anento snorted. “How does it work?” The woman at the bar flicked her mandibles shyly as Thyllis placed a hand on a chitinous foreleg, gazing into the woman’s compound eyes. “She just likes women,” I protested. We didn’t have to understand genders to accept her! “But how does it work?” Anento repeated. “She goes to a bar, meets someone—” “And they leave together,” Captain agreed. “She’s always done that. Nothing wrong with it.” “I know there’s nothing wrong with it!” Anento groaned. “But why women? Why not everyone if she’s not picky about how many mandibles they’ve got?” He had a point, but it was Thyllis’s business, not ours! “Are you jealous?” Captain laughed. “Maybe she can give you some tips.” “Should we be talking about this?” I asked uneasily. “Women,” Anento said. “That doesn’t even mean the same thing to everyone! Practicing Dodishodans don’t even think Amascada has women.” Clarke wore an odd expression as we watched the Aiksonosk woman laugh at Thyllis’s jokes. “I’m sure this one’s a really nice girl,” Anento continued. “Little young for her, maybe, but they’re both adults. But how’d Thyllis know she’d be interested?”

Nat pressed her lips to Ceres’, and the lust that surged between her legs blasted away any last reserves of doubt. Ceres’ tongue prodded against her mouth and Nat opened for it, tasting the cider on the woman’s breath. Nat surrendered to the exploration, unrestrained excitement and joy ballooning in her chest. It’s been a while since I’ve shared a snippet from THE ICE BETWEEN US, so here’s one I’ve never shared before, from one of the additions to my latest draft.
"A Stag Lift is where..." Before he can finish his explanation, a woman's voice chimes in. "He wraps his right arm around your waist, picks up your extended left leg, and spins you around while you keep your right leg bent. It's quite literally one of the simplest lifts you could possibly do, Golden Girl." Freja. She stands in the doorway wearing a light blue sport crop top. She looks impossibly tall, even leaning against the doorframe, the length of her legs enhanced by the shortness of her matching booty shorts. "Didn't expect to see you here today," Misha says to her.
