Just once, I'd like to see Dick Durbin *try* to explain the actual mechanisms by which repealing 230 will protect children from being exploited and abused. There will be hand waving about how it will "open them up to litigation" but that's not an answer.
Children are being exploited and abused because Big Tech consistently prioritizes profits over people.

Enough is enough. Time to sunset Section 230.

🇦🇺: 67% support the new legal ban on all social media for minors under 16 BUT only 29% will actually enforce that for their own kids

“Bans for thee and thine, but not for me and mine!”🤦‍♂️

Also that one group that's all "Gen Z" kids that has been lobbying congress to pass KOSA and has all this mysterious cash laying around to fly all over the country ALSO was supporting a tiktok ban. So do with that what you will

NEW: They kept saying they were gonna do it and now they've done it

A group of clowns (Senators) have introduced a bill to FULLY REPEAL Section 230.

No reform, no replacement, just utter destruction of all online free speech.

We can't let this happen. Share & take action

Really great piece by @charlottewillner.bsky.social & @davidsullivan.bsky.social highlighting how at the very same time Congress was claiming to want to "protect the children online," the White House was announcing that it's blocking visas for trust & safety workers who actually help kids be safe

Senator Durbin has had this explained to him multiple times. Getting rid of 230 doesn't help this, but will make it worse. It will make it impossible for smaller sites to exist (like this one) and will give MORE POWER to companies like Meta and X.

Why would Durbin want to do that?

No theyre not. You know they're not. You know Section 230 being gutted actually let's pedophiles walk free, because this was explained to you and million times by a million people.

You want this. You want kids to be harmed. You want these sick abusers to walk free. Otherwise you wouldn't do this.

Yep. And I can say from personal experience that several experts within the tech justice space have patiently sat and explained to CCDH why this is

a) not true, and
b) a position that endangers human rights

and each time they have been like "great points, thanks" and then kept pushing the lie
I see this argument made all the time and it's embarrassing for CCDH to keep making it, because it's a lie. Section 230, what they're talking about, does not give anyone a "get out of jail free" card. It simply puts the liability on the party who actually engaged in the violative behavior.

but for some reason rando pundits and organizations with no background in tech policy can pop up out of nowhere with bad ideas like repealing section 230 or mandating online id checks or copyrighting everything etc etc and mostly get a bunch of ppl being like "yeah right on!" and millions in funding

gutting Section 230 is one of those ideas that is so world-endingly bad that there is no being able to conceptualize it, so part of me just has this weird numbness when thinking about it passing

First it was "just porn," then it was social media, now messaging apps and image filters.

And it's not just kids, it's all of us. The number of places online where one has to show papers or disclose identity grows rapidly. So are the places the government (or AI) needs access, without encryption.

You absolutely can sue a social media company if they harm you or your kids, actually.

You can't sue them for something someone else said, however.

You can sue the person who said the thing instead.

See how that works? It's very simple, isn't it?

I wrote about the unprecedented mass censorship and surveillance laws that Congress is trying to ram through in the name of “protecting kids” and how none of this is about protecting kids. In fact, these laws cause great harm to all of us, for @zeteo.com
Social Media Is a Literal Lifeline for Many Kids. Don't Ban Them From Using It
US politicians want to replicate Australia's draconian law prohibiting children under 16 from using social media. But experts say such bans will actually make kids 'significantly less safe online.'

Constantly thinking about the alternate universe where Gore won in 2000 and none of this would be happening
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.
