Some key takeaways from today’s hearing:

-Many acknowledged that Senate KOSA is a threat to free expression.

-Bills discussed have similar issues to KOSA, esp online ID checks.

-The bad idea that surveillance + censorship will keep kids safe online drove the discussion.

KEEP AT EM! ✊
NEW: We hosted a live-stream of today's House Energy & Commerce committee hearing to provide commentary + analysis as Congress considers bills that would mandate online ID checks across the internet and censor very important resources for young people.

They’re describing it as a “shock and awe” campaign, which is why it’s essential to show them there’s huge opposition NOW. Call / email your reps to let them know you oppose censorship bills like KOSA and the SCREEN.

Read up and get involved in the @fightforthefuture.org Week of Action.
With SCREEN Act and KOSA on the legislative block this week, there couldn't be a better time for Fight's "Stop Online ID Checks" Week of Action.

Congress is attempting to fast track KOSA and more than a dozen bills that would restrict internet access, censor speech and increase surveillance under the guise of protecting children.

Committee hearings begin tomorrow.
Lawmakers to consider 19 bills for childproofing the internet
KOSA is back, along with more than a dozen other bills that will erode free speech and privacy in the name of protecting kids.

age verification bills are bipartisan. midterms don't mean anything. and if it doesn't pass this year they just try in january since the congressional session doesn't end on december 31st.
It honestly feels like a performance if you ask me. They know there's no way it's getting passed this year and then there's the fact that mid-terms are next year.

If they want to turn this into a mid-term issue, then that's just going to blow up in their faces.

While KOSA has taken up much of the attention in kids online safety discussions, a bill mandating app stores conduct age verification has been sweeping states and Congress. It will be discussed at tomorrow's House hearing, and just picked up Pinterest as a supporter www.theverge.com/policy/83087...

Disappointing to see companies sign-on to the App Store Accountability bill as if it's not the first small step before full-blown censorship for all online services.

Lawmakers aren't going to stop at the app stores. It's foolish to think otherwise. thehill.com/policy/techn...

One of the things about trust is that it is efficient. It saves you having to invest a lot of time and effort in verification, and if placed in the right places, saves you a lot of pain.

"The diseases will do the education" is what we get when we don't trust.

You shouldn’t have to present your ID, credit card info, or face to be scanned just to access your favorite sites, news, or games yet this is the growing reality for Internet users globally. We need a firestorm to take down online ID checks for good-- so we planned one. Join us for a week of action!

We’re fighting back to save the Internet we need at a time when it really, really matters but we’re up against some of the slimiest politicians & special interest money out there.

To beat ID checks as a small, queer woman-led team, we need funds to punch up 💸 💸 💸

I’m still thinking about Bari Weiss saying that Hasan Piker (extremely popular influencer) is less of a measure of where Americans are than Alan Dershowitz (extremely unpopular Epstein associate, his own neighbors won’t sell him a pierogi)

As always: the best way to protect kids online is to pass strong legislation that protects EVERYONE from Big Tech's surveillance capitalist business model & breaks their monopolies so that people can have social media and tech tools that serve community needs. Nothing in this package looks like that
November 27, 2025 at 5:12 PM
umm....??? excuse me??

and btw, this won't just be used against "explicit" sites. ANY site that happens to have "explicit" content will force you to upload your ID online. this includes bluesky. this includes something as basic as googling something.

If age verification for the entire internet goes through in the US according to new proposed bills in the House, we would lose soooo many activists and organizers who post their work and encourage others online. So many.

ICE deported a woman who owned a home in the US for 30 years. A judge banned ICE from deporting her to Sierra Leone where she had been tortured, so it deported her to Ghana, which kidnapped her and sent her back Sierra Leone anyway. ICE is part of this illegal conspiracy.
