Then he walked into the fog until the world took him. I waited until the stars appeared faint and cold above the sea. Until the wind chilled me through my coat. Until I could no longer tell where the cliff ended and the night began. He never returned. Aurora vanished into her work. The Department issued its sterile statements. Washington buried him quietly, the way families with too much history bury their failures. And sometimes—driving the long, lonely highways of California—I see shapes on the shoulder. Broken bodies. Small casualties of speed and steel. I do not stop. But I always wonder: Is he out there still? Following the hunger, or fleeing it?
