I guess I should clarify that, if theres a retro game with progressive scan, and not line doubled, there could be a case for scanlines being a bit silly. but in the end its up to the viewer to like things

I understood and saw scanlines as early as colecovision, to answer your question. And this predated my understanding of live TV being interlaced 59.997

when games started becoming progressive scan, it always felt less good to me, at the time.

Im of two minds on this debate, I like a good scanline filter because it looks sharp and consistent, (because without line doubling, the interlacing would jiggle the screen) etc

But I also really like rf rainbows and artifacts because it is both nostalgic and an effect the artists accounted for.
