This is in no way breaking news, but Dolly Parton is a damn National hero. Our boy just turned 5 and received this message from Dolly as he graduated from her Imagination Library. It’s such a wonderful program!

Hit 60.1°F at the house today and it was the first time since in what, three weeks, that driving on the snow (the last half mile to my house is still mainly covered in frozen stuff) felt soft and slushy #VAwx
February 11, 2026 at 12:20 AM
Got down to 2.7°F at my house this morning #VAwx
BITTER MONDAY MORNING LOWS -- Widespreads single digits and teens, even a few subzeros

Could this be the coldest morning we have the rest of the winter? Decent chance.

Gradually milder this week.

Warmer than normal next week.

Here's that Ring #SuperBowl commercial:

Does anyone follow me who also does not follow Becky? If so, you’re doing the internet wrong, especially tonight.
Disturbingly detailed analysis of my first rewatch incoming

I missed the commercial, but the first modification I made to my new house was to peel off the damn ring doorbell
Ok, you can stop texting me, I saw the Ring ad. Troubling things about it 🧵:

-The long awaited (much warned about) intro of “AI” recognition. It starts w/ searching for a “brown dog” but means the tech is there for lisence plate reading, face recognition, searching for suspects by description, etc

Had to pull over twice today on 66… inbound stop was to let the 2yo out of her car seat so she could puke. Outbound stop was thanks to a car that alerted me that our Thule box was about to slide off the roof rack on account of getting buffeted by crosswinds

STRONG MESSAGING about the seriousness of the cold and wind on Saturday from the National Weather Service. Power outages possible. Longest period with subzero wind chills in 30+ years.

A good day to stay inside, or bundle up big time if you have to be outside.

4y364d year old: Is that what happens to our bodies after we die?

Me: yeah, eventually.

4yo: and then people dig you up and use your bones for decorations?

The Potomac River frozen shore to shore. Not pictured and just below the ice: One of the biggest environmental disasters in D.C. history.

High temp today was 42.4°F at our cabin in the valley. Dog still resorting to pooping in the driveway because she’s tired of cutting up her paws on the ice.

Introduced my children to Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night” which led us down an 80s playlist rabbit hole. While listening to “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” from the back of the truck I heard my 2.5yo’s little voice asking, “can we listen to ‘Kids in America?’” (A song she heard in December)

I removed the ice sheet from the roof of my 10’ tall Sprinter tonight so not sure anyone else has an excuse for having any frozen stuff left on their vehicles.

Normally I rank February second to January in “worst months of the year” but this is a really good point and the evenings are already noticeably longer than they were in December
A quick reminder of what #BigFebruary is about…
Thanks to the magic of the cosmos, we start gaining daylight much faster in Feb than in Jan. Over 20 mins a week - setting us up for Spring.

This chart is by @neilrkaye.bsky.social and is one of my all time favourites.

My 2.5yo daughter’s bedroom is connected to mine. When she wakes up and I’m still in bed I get a cheerful “Good morning Daddy!” If my wife is also still in bed (very rare), daughter runs to her side “Mommy!” But if the dog is in between the bed we get “Has Sofi been fed yet? Can I go feed her?” ❤️

IPAWS Public Safety Alert just kicked off out here in the valley. A whole lot of space heaters are making the system struggle to keep up…

Here! Tell people you know in real life about this!
Here's a photo of Tippy & her family. They live in Brooklyn Park and she's been in the Minnesota Reformer before. And there's artist and children's book illustrator Heather, the sort of person who participates as a host for neighborhood garage theater & performance tours.
