“As of November 5th, it estimated that U.S.A.I.D.’s dismantling has already caused the deaths of six hundred thousand people, two-thirds of them children.”

As if it needed to be repeated, the dismantling of USAID will go down in history as one of the modern world’s greatest moral failures.

Look closely and you’ll still see signs of good news these days. This analysis by @ember-energy.org shows that the #energytransition will not be denied.
NEW | Solar and wind OUTPACED global electricity demand growth in the first half of 2025, leading to a fall in fossil fuels compared to this time last year ☀️🌪️

Record solar and steady wind growth is reshaping global power as renewables OVERTAKE coal for the first time.

Yes, the energy transition is proceeding and yes renewable energy capacity is expanding each year. But it’s complementing - instead of replacing - fossil fuel demand. We need to collectively peak and reduce fossil fuel usage yesterday.

Excellent albeit alarming view of a seismically reshuffled world order by @nilsgilman.bsky.social where power and alliances revolve around diverging energy futures and the willingness to accept or deny unfolding climate realities.

Excellent clap back by @ametsoc.org in the climate wonk rap battle.
The @ametsoc.org has released a statement on the deeply flawed DoE 2025 Climate Synthesis report. It reaffirms that the modern climate is changing primarily because of human influence; this is harmful; scientists agree; and response options are available. Read here: www.ametsoc.org/ams/about-am...

Cooler heads did not prevail. That USAID's dismantling was both initially unplanned and born out of personal retribution and lack of familiarity with typical government processes is stunning even amidst every other story in our current news cycle.

More politicians need to adopt this stance and actually act on a set of values. If citizens are expected to adapt when they're RIF'ed, laid off, or entire professions disappear (I.e. idev) then so can our so-called leaders who should represent our country's top knowledge and leadership.
AOC during Zohran for Mayor rally: "There are people out there who say, 'If you go out and make this endorsement, your political career will be over.' And to that I say: I don't care. We will never get to a better place if everyone is just worried about themselves. If it's over, so be it."

On one hand, perverse logic driving this decision MIGHT go: No need to look at the data, disasters are only going to get more deadly, destructive, and expensive.

On the other hand: 27 individual billion-dollar climate/weather events in the US in 2024 (up from 5-year moving average of 23).
NOAA will stop updating database tracking costliest weather disasters
The billion-dollar disaster tracker is on a growing list of datasets NOAA says that either scientists will no longer update or the administration will decommission entirely.

Been thinking a lot about AI and @xiyebastida.bsky.social writing here reflects many of my feelings. In a worst case scenario AI is devastating to our world & society. But even in more positive or likely scenarios, I’m not sure we’re better off with AI than without it.
