It’s worth remembering that the Gilded Age didn’t end with the Great Depression, but with the Progressive Era.

Kind of funny that these are cherry trees given the whole “I cannot tell a lie” mythology

Cherry trees at Trump Tower, resplendent in their incandescent bloom.

Tim Walz: "It's not a 'woke policy' to provide food for children to get breakfast and lunch, and we get better outcomes from that. They defined things on their terms that weren't true ... we got timid."

The National Humanities Alliance is collecting information on canceled NEH grants to share with congressional leaders. This is legit fact finding in support of competent lobbying. If you've had your grant canceled, do let them know.

Trump has been and continues to be extremely Hooverite in his approach and (more importantly) in terms of how history will view his presidencies - praying for us all.

The NYU-Marron report on electrification is out: It pairs electrification and other components to develop a high-throughput infrastructure design framework, which slashes time off of existing commuter and inter-city passenger rail services. We call it Momentum -- transitcosts.com/wp-content/u...
The 'Momentum' cover page, which a twin-hued abstracted version of an M, which has been central to the identity of metros and passenger rail services around the world.

If you stormed the Capitol on January 6th, this is what was looking down on you.

Interior view of Thomas U. Walter’s cast iron dome at the US Capitol!

Of particular interest these days - The Capitol Rotunda is topped by Constantino Brumidi’s fresco, The Apotheosis of George Washington showing GW draped in purple robes exalted in heaven.
View of the Capitol dome interior. Fresco painting shows Washington surrounded by classical figures as he rises to god status.

Ah ok! Apologies - Yes, there are quite a few places to sit, I think there was a ledge of sorts by the building entrance too.

More on these chunky benches - they appear to be made out of large pieces of wood, and are held together with dowels. They’re a bit worse for wear but are a lovely addition (and comfortable).

This one’s for you @susanklaiber.bsky.social
Photo of wooden bench — a handful of are scattered throughout the site. Detail photo of wooden bench — dowels are visible in the arm rest . Photo of wooden bench — the benches are designed with a jaunty outline.

Besides the super structures there are also some nice, more overtly PoMo flourishes, like this triangular pink picket fence, a trellis, geometric planters, and some very whimsical wooden benches.
View of pink trellis and picket fence. Close up view of the picket fence - I like how the boards alternate to either break or segment the mini-pediments of the pickets. View of the planters, designed in a circle-inset-into-a-square pattern. A second planter inverts this geometric motif. View of the benches - made of thick slabs of wood and designed in a graphic style.

Finally seeing Venturi Scott Brown’s Ghost Structures at Franklin Court in the Independence National Historical Park in person.

Beautifully simple painted steel sections used to draw the outline of Benjamin Franklin’s Philadelphia home.
View of Venturi Scott Brown’s Ghost Structures at Franklin Court. Extremely cool light monitors illuminate the below-ground museum located beneath the structures. View of Venturi Scott Brown’s Ghost Structures at Franklin Court. VSBA rendered the outline of Franklin’s home in painted steel sections. View of Venturi Scott Brown’s Ghost Structures at Franklin Court. What appears as a straightforward outline of the home is complicated by the treatment of the chimneys, which hang and balance on the structure in an unexpectedly (pr perhaps, expectedly) delightful manner. View of Venturi Scott Brown’s Ghost Structures at Franklin Court. The archway of one of the structures echoes the mid-block passage into the square from the street.

Extremely chuffed to work on a presentation for Women’s History Month centered on the work of Frances Perkins that I will get to deliver to my kid’s 1st grade class.
