Picked up this album (The Velvet Underground & Nico) at JBs today.

Still a mind blowingly good album

I was thinking this was the exception that proves the rule, underlined by the guest role of the journo. But I see they also have a know your rights re strip searches article so maybe they are changing.

But Ketan's point stands, the headline will impact more people than the article itself
paulbr4.bsky.social
But most people won't read past the headline. And it's far more realistic to try to get the headline fixed than to try to get most people reading past the headline

I enjoyed this one (as I did all the early ones). Not sure how much my mind's eye owes to the TV series but I have vivid pictures of the house and the back lane

Punishing job applicants for something fully outside their control, like the decision of a company to hire them or not out of thousands of qualified applicants, is exactly the same as punishing someone for eg: how many people walked past their house today. It makes you a fucking inhumane monster.

Labor's employment minister rep admits that payment suspensions "cause harm", but they're "an important part" of the (unlawful) mutual obligations system, because

"At the end of the day we want ppl to get off payments and find a job"

gross 'best form of welfare is a job' stuff from the ALP here

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

Again, every time this happens, we literally have no idea if the masked, plainclothes people are actual government agents, or private citizens acting in party-affiliated paramilitaries. The whole point of IDs & uniforms & no masks is that we know these things.

On the centenary of Thatcher's birth, there have been predictable calls for a memorial to her memory. But Britain's 2300 food banks serve that purpose already.

Skinny.

Crime? Journalism, apparently.

Palestinian journalist Ahmad Abdul Aal from Gaza, was freed today after months of detention in Israeli prisons.
The image shows a deeply emotional reunion. A Palestinian man—identified as journalist Ahmad Abdul Aal—sits surrounded by a crowd, wearing a grey sweatshirt and looking somber, visibly affected. In the foreground, a young boy gently cups his face with both hands, gazing up at him with tenderness and concern. Around them, several people look on, some with solemn or tearful expressions. The moment captures both the exhaustion and relief of Abdul Aal’s release after enduring months of Israeli imprisonment, and the quiet strength of familial love and resilience in the aftermath.

A new study published in Nature Climate Action finds Woodside’s Scarborough gas project could cause 100s of heat-related deaths & exposed 500k people to unprecedented heat.

Govt can’t claim climate leadership while approving projects like this.

The research, conducted by academics at ANU, suggests the massive offshore gas project off the coast of Western Australia will cause warming of 0.00039 degrees.

"People in the crowds repeatedly asked the freed captives if they had seen their loved ones, still missing in detention. Families often had no idea if their relatives had been detained..."

Thanks to @dropsitenews.com news for doing what western media rarely does:
treat Palestinians with humanity.

Gossip
Harry's Reasons
Talking with the Taxman about Poetry

Lots of other good albums on that list. Have played both Gossip and Harry's Reasons in the past week from original LPs - gave away the Billy Bragg one :(

No room for activism in today's ALP. They're happily part of the Establishment. The youth should know their place and defer to the permitted protocols

I think from the 70s at least this would have been considered rude if the homeowners weren't smokers themselves or known to be ok with it. In Australia at least. Might be put up with at the time but would be grumbled about after

We're approaching the stage of US fascism where churches build tunnels to facilitate escape from authorities.
