🌱🌿 Five Things You Can Do To Save the Butterflies:

1. Stop using pesticides and herbicides (unless you're trying to manage aggressive invasive species). Everything else I list will be designed to attract life to your yard and that's pretty pointless if you kill them after they arrive.

I am PRETTY SURE I can get stickers in time, so HEY!! I will open my DM’s for Christmas. If you leave me a message with your address and tell me you’ve bought my book before Dec. 15 (and you’re in the US) I will mail you a signed nameplate for it!

If you're #GlutenFree and make your own pie crust but find yourself missing the toasty flavor of a wheat crust, try using Irish/grass-fed butter. You can also add a tablespoon of whiskey. It's not the same but it adds depth and richness.

If I could stop getting bloody noses this week, that would be great.

I'm seeing pie discourse so let me just say, if you hate pumpkin pie but a pumpkin pie is required for the occasion, this is the recipe for you. Every person who has eaten this pie now uses it as their Thanksgiving pumpkin pie.

Ingredients:
2/3 cup packed golden/light brown sugar

Last month, the Tule River Indian Tribe purchased 17,000 acres of their ancestral lands where they are reintroducing tule elk. The purchase was partly funded by California’s Tribal Nature-Based Solutions Grant, which funds tribal land return projects. www.latimes.com/california/s....
Elk are again roaming on lands that California has returned to the Tule River Indian Tribe
Tribal leaders and Gov. Gavin Newsom gathered Wednesday to mark the return of 17,000 acres of ancestral land to the Tule River Indian tribe.

Winter Storm Warning through Thursday here. Blizzard Warnings for the U.P.

I'd love to experience a winter up there once. Some parts are expected to get 40" over the next two days.

grease floats.

when it flows in sewage and into our plants, it thickens as temps fall, separating in our settling tanks.

the churning water forms grease globs that build like snowballs, and operators remove them so they don’t clog the process.

listen. don’t pour grease down your drains.

Husband and I finally got a bird collision film put up on our huge foyer window. He did almost all the work - he had to be on our porch roof for it.

The maple tree in front of our house reflects in it and we sometimes hear 2 or 3 bird strikes a day. Such a relief to finally have it up.

My big project this week is to clean out our bookshelves and that means cleaning several other areas of the house where books have accumulated.

There's a lot to get rid of. Old kids books, so many religious books, unused cookbooks, paperbacks that will never be read again.

There are two whole

Dear body:

Why are you acting like you're 2 days away from your period when in fact your period just stopped a week ago?

Sort your shit out. It's a holiday week.

Sincerely,
Yourself

I started the day off good, physically and mentally, and 3 hours later I'm exhausted and crying.

I am everyone's sounding board, therapist, and helper. I'm stuck waiting, conserving what little energy I have, for whoever needs me next. I exist in a liminal space between demands.

It's misery.

For #CrossStitch folk who have #OwlForest patterns but don't have the flosses, I've been working at creating a list of dupes. It's not been wildly successful, but I've been able to confirm a handful of excellent matches and find some suggestions to explore as well.

Both have been seen by the neighbor now!
Haven't spotted the ferals since we let them go and I know that's normal, but I wish I knew they were okay.

My sheets ripped in a couple places (thanks enshitification!) and I'm having such a hard time throwing them away. Shouldn't I be ripping them into bandages to support the war efforts or something?

(I have definite textile hoarding tendencies.)

Species like wild plum and American hazelnut are in sharp decline as they're full sun thicket species that thrived in oak savanna and prairie settings, which were mostly converted to farmland.

Invasives like autumn olive and amur honeysuckle cause further harm.
Our first American hazelnut harvest! We have two bushes mature enough to produce. I couldn't try any (fuck you MCAS) but husband and Miss 12 said they were good. We saved some to plant. My goal is to have an 80 foot thicket of these and wild plums.

Cat for scale.

Two nights in a row I've dreamt that my brother and/or mom ruined my birthday. My birthday is in July. I have no idea what my brain is up to.

Last night I also dreamt that I was tricked into becoming a mermaid and giving up my freedom.

The hell?
