Seriously. You can save so much time & avoid bad results with even just a 5 minute conversation with a librarian about what you’re researching.
This whole thread but especially the point about asking your librarian instead. As I keep telling people, genAI hallucination rate: 30-80%; librarian hallucination rate: 0%
🧵 There's an add running on many podcasts right now for student Google Gemini. I don't want to condescend to students, because I think many are savvy about GenAI, but please understand that "free" year they're offering means training their AI by uploading *your* work, your intellectual property.

You know, it would be pretty cool of the Academy if they gave Dick VanDyke an Oscar in 2026 for … anything, so that he could finally get that EGOT designation.

The people who support $12B in corporate welfare to farms and forgave $80B in auto bailouts and forgave $700B in bank bailouts and forgave $755B in PPP loans want you to know that forgiving medical debt and student debt is socialism😐

Very problematic for academic / business study and forecasting purposes.
So far the Trump admin has canceled:

- The PPI Inflation Report
- The Jobs Report
- The Inflation Report
- The third-quarter GDP report

Trump thinks Americans are dumb enough to miss that he failed to deliver on any of his economic promises if he just hides all the data.

the law is real until it gets to SCOTUS at which point it becomes fake, which doesn't bother the six reactionaries at the top but does undermine literally everyone else in the profession

Sobering to think of all the dismantling and sabotage of everything that is part of the common good being done by this regime just to save billionaires from having to pay taxes.

For anyone who knows anything about genocides and the incitement of genocidal violence, this is the kind of hair-raising stuff you find in transcripts of testimony before special tribunals.

This is one advantage of having the historical memory of authoritarianism, as I have from Brazil: you know that, when the regime is gone, the people who collaborated and acquiesced look terrible in retrospect. It may look reasonable and justifiable now, but believe me, it will age like milk.

Creating a military conflict with Venezuela gives this administration a legal "hook" to invoke the Alien Enemies Act. In other words, the foreign war is being manufactured in order to facilitate court deference for its domestic mass deportation policy. It's a Stephen Miller Special.

A sobering thread for those of us in academia. Again, it’s astonishing how much this regime (w/help from Heritage & Project 2025) is committed to literally destroying everything good about this country.
The entire business model of R1 public universities rests on 4 revenue sources:

1. Federal grants
2. Private gifts/endowments
3. Tuition (esp. from foreign students)
4. State $

For decades, 📈 in 1-3 offset a secular 📉 in 4. Now, 1 & 3 are being decimated & 4 ain't coming back. The math is clear.

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that one of the main impacts of LLMs is to disrupt thinking: to make it so that far too many people never properly learn how to do it, and then to control the output so there are thoughts that people never learn how to think.
