A great write up on the life and liveliness of the “Manchester” EM Reading Group. As Phil says, it’s rare to find space to really talk and think in modern academia.

I don’t get to go as often as I’d like, but like any favourite place that one has, knowing it’s there makes things a little better.

RIP Dave Ball. I genuinely think that early eighties synth pop was one of those times when the avant garde broke through to the mainstream, opening things up musically and culturally.
Checkout the BBC's Synth Britannia doc, from 2009, if you've never seen it.

Dave Ball was not some bloke in the background of Soft Cell – he drove their startling, subversive sound
Far more than a mute foil to Marc Almond, Ball brought his love of northern soul and strange electronics to bear on some of Britain’s most uncompromising pop

Win or lose today, the transformation in this wallabies team from the team that went into the first Lions test is incredible. With ball in hand they're a joy to watch. Exhibition stuff but played under pressure against the best teams. #NZLvsAUS

The body of evidence showing that when centrist parties adopt the priorities and talking points of the far right, they torpedo themselves is vast and powerful. Yet Keir Starmer's Labour Party seems determined to ignore it.

Series thoughts: Lions never really impressed, less than the sum of their parts. Didn't look like the kind of impressive Farrell machine of a team that we'd hoped to see. Australia stepped up in games 2 & 3 & credit to them. Having said that, I think they'll struggle against SA & NZ. #AusvLions

Poor performance by the Lions. I don't care what the conditions are, if every time you kick the ball for the first 50 minutes the opposition take it cleanly you have to try a different tactic. They're basically just giving away possession & failing to even try to build any momentum. #AusvLions

Big half time for Andy Farrell here. If he gets it right the Lions should still win this comfortably but if the same team appear for the second half they could lose to a team that has no business getting close to them. #AusvLions

#AusvLions Russell now missed two conversations. Get Owen Farrell on at half time, he'll kick the goals, inject some aggression and lead by example

Embarrassing performance by the Lions against a bang-average Aus team. Aus might be playing well but there's no way they should be posing problems for this lions side if the latter were playing at their best. Big questions for Andy Farrell. Lackluster, missed tackles, poor decision-making #AusvLions
July 26, 2025 at 10:46 AM
As poor as the Australian team are, the Lions aren't looking impressive and aren't playing in a way I'd associate with a Farrell side. They'll still win this by a margin, by international rugby union standards, but it's not impressive. #AusvLions
July 19, 2025 at 11:32 AM
I never thought I'd say this but it's sad to see what appears to be the terminal decline of Australian rugby union. I've rarely had less interest in a Lions test. France Vs Lions would have been a more interesting series.
