It is so sweet how seriously they take guard duty!

I had to take a video to see what these birds were up to on top of my head. Earl doesn’t sing and do flirty heart wings for his sister Ginger (that’s good) but he does for his mother Lemon (that’s bad) although Lemon will bite him for it (that’s good).

My tiels will look at me like that if I *don’t* give them peas. Although they’re pea snobs and they only like the sweet baby peas.

That’s awesome. Cockatiels are the best!

I’m a #ForeverCanadian canvasser because Alberta’s story isn’t just separatist headlines. I want more Canadians to see that despite our disagreements, Alberta’s heart belongs to #Canada. The warm and hopeful vibes I experienced while canvassing today convinced me of that more than ever! 🇨🇦

Haha, that’s a much more positive way of looking at it!

That time I couldn’t get Skittle into her cage before my video conference so I threw sheets on her perches to startle her out of the room. Oh, to be as bold and determined as a 34 gram #budgie. She landed on my head at least 20 times during the meeting. I was mortified.
A spiral perch, hanging from the ceiling in front of the window, is covered by a brightly coloured sheet. This does not stop the precocious budgie with a “fight me” face from somehow landing on the sheet and clinging to it.

A bad migraine took me out the other day. My husband sent me this photo later. 💛 my flock. Honey’s in guard position at my face, and Lemon is in her traditional spot on my foot. Yes, I woke up covered in bird poop.
#cockatiel
Five cockatiels perched on their human, who is lying on a couch covered in a blanket.

Confession: our birds have a permanent zone on our kitchen table where we leave them fresh veggies to munch on throughout the day. Their favourite treat is live lettuce. So many little holes.
#cockatiel
A cockatiel (Earl) nibbling on a head of living butter lettuce.

Aww, I’d melt! Beautiful.

Yes! They’ve been besties since they hatched. They get along with their big brother Spritzer, but he’s closer to me.

I think they know. They cuddle the same way as they did when they could first stand, and their behaviour is never flirty with each other, just affectionate.

The cute bird:dystopia ratio is just not high enough today. I’m throwing a picture of Earl and Ginger into the void and going offline to play a dystopian cat game. #cockatiel
Two cockatiel siblings mutually grooming on the arm of a chair, looking blissful.

Twist to disconnect.

They’re so observant and clever! Definitely underrated.

Skittle can mimic a PERFECT Lemon alarm call. She uses it to call the cockatiels upstairs to their cage when she decides it’s bedtime, or to startle the flock into panic flights around the room while she looks down on the chaos like an Olympic god. #budgie
A tiny but mighty budgie, staring straight down at you from the blade of a ceiling fan because she thinks she’s better than you.

Yes, in Canada. It’s uncomfortable but I’m sure there are lots of people who can’t absorb those kinds of increases at all.

I tell him it’ll give him a tummy ache, but he really, really does…

I just gave my teenager a heads up that he’ll need to get a part time job at the grocery store if he keeps eating this much. I kid, of course, but our budget is 50% higher than 2019, between inflation and “second dinner.”

Spritzer, standing on his little bird tiptoes and trying to take a chomp out of the aloe vera. It’s a good thing that #cockatiels can’t fly, or he’d be such a menace.
A young cockatiel craning his neck, beak wide open, trying to bite an aloe vera leaf but coming up just a little short.

I saw this picture and was reminded of how Pompom hung off the side of the nest box cage for three straight days. At the time I thought he just missed Honey, but he must have known that the eggs were real and about to hatch. #budgie
A concerned budgie clinging to the outside of a closed cockatiel cage. Inside the cage is a cardboard box, which contained (not visible here) a cockatiel dad sitting on two eggs that were days from hatching.

Google Trends graphs show relative popularity of search terms, normalized on a 1-100 scale rather than numbers of searches. I looked it up for Canada and saw a similar trend.

Haha yes. The “I don’t want to bite you but I will bite you, then I’ll cuddle up under your chin so you can make me feel better after biting you” pose.

So for science I tried picking up all five like this. The three babies allowed it for a few seconds then wiggled. Lemon would not let go of her perch. Honey had his beak armed. It really makes a difference how they’re raised!

The absolute perfection of those feathers, days before he learned to fly and turned them into a raggedy mess.
