I've decided to make my printed Cyberbots guide public in pdf form. A lot of people said it looked really useful for teaching people the game, and I figure the next version will look so different that people can have this one lol

I feel like Street Fighter EX2 was the only one to get it right, and way earlier than a lot of games. It'll at least teach you something like j.HK cr.MP cr.MK xx hadoken xx shinku for Ryu lol

Fighting Layer test. I don't think my PC can handle recording this with OBS but it runs pretty well normally.

I like how we’re getting “jet set radio but you’re a train”, “tony hawk but you’re a demon” and “ready 2 rumble but you’re a muppet.” Let’s see what else we got. Power Stone with bug girls. Bass Fishing with homosexuals. Shenmue for Goths.

well it's only if you escape. if you don't escape you die and if you do escape then he gets to hit IK again :)
polarbair.bsky.social
did you know Chipp can *combo his instant kill into itself* if they do the input to escape it? the only thing stopping you is that you might not nail the P+K input

its the weekend baby. youknow what that means. its time to play precisely one game of guilty gear: the missing link and call 911

the cross is sincerely really good in CV1 (and it's hard to imagine them ever making it bad), it's just not the holy water. and the axe is a niche but usable weapon. it's just the knife that sucks
polarbair.bsky.social
you know, a lot of things about my Castlevania run made me feel like a real Gamer. but the greatest was probably beating Death with the level 2 cross instead of the holy water, something t5 said *he's* never done before lol

People will tell you "oh yeah if you just block the okizeme mixup then the character is free after that." But then you get to the okizeme mixup and it looks like this.

I'm sorry but it's extremely funny to chalk this up to modern game design being inherently manipulative. This is just Ghosts n Goblins

Spoilers for Absolum, but you actually might want to spoil yourself on this, because this is some of the worst meta-progression bait I've ever heard of

(Also a great review overall, one that's for once made from the perspective who gave beat 'em ups a deeper shot)
If you don’t believe that Absolum prioritizes the grind above all else, then I’ll have to pull out my trump card and talk about the last boss of the game. Don’t read the next paragraph if you don’t want that spoiled. Or do, honestly, because I recommend knowing this ahead of time so you don’t make the same mistake I did. Once you complete the game once, you find out that actually you need to beat the game again to fight the real final boss. Kind of obnoxious already, but sure. I immediately started another run, but died early due to the game introducing a new extra-hard challenge that I wanted to try out. No problem, I had unlocked one extra from the progression system. I decided to carry on and actually ended up all the way at the end to fight the final boss.

Just before the fight, a merchant warned me that the boss had a fatal scream and recommended that I purchase an absurdly expensive extra life. I kind of figured that merchant was referring to some difficult to dodge attack and braced myself for it. No such luck - the final boss seemingly just instantly and unavoidably kills you at the start of the fight, so my run where I was otherwise super powerful and at full health ended right there. This more or less killed my interest in playing further.

The goal of this decision seems clear enough: the developers didn’t want you beating Absolum too fast and this insta-kill gimmick was a good way to keep you in the hamster wheel. Wouldn’t you know it, my very next permanent upgrade gave me another extra life on top of the two I had, so my next run would have definitely been the run! If I were the kind of person who got addicted to the progression system, I could easily see myself getting sucked by this bait, hook line and sinker. Sadly for Absolum, I am not that kind of person. I don’t have an addictive personality. Most of the psychological tricks that modern video games employ don’t work on me – I don’t need things to be addicted to, I want things that enrich my life or give me some personal satisfaction.

not breaking new ground with this observation but I think the high schooler canard of "Why am I learning X if I'm never gonna use it in real life" has become an extremely successful piece of rhetoric & is being affirmed by the algorithmic media landscape, hustle culture, the influencer industry, etc

Generative AI, in both form and content, and whether looked on favourably or critically, seems to embody a collective hopelessness about the prospect of human learning and creativity, if not human knowledge altogether. It’s as if climate change had fans.

there I am!! the art for the player cards is very cool btw
screenshot of dot challenge, dot_lvl's website for the classicvania challenge. It's scrolled down to my (!) player card, where I'm ranked "Garlic" because I have 1 red stamp for Castlevania (NES). You get red stamps for beating the game with continues.

The art itself depicts a wooden board with a red satchel hanging from it, a poster with a vampire bat, and several garlic bulbs tied together. The satchel contains the player card, an axe, and two wooden stakes attached to it with belts.
