For Harvard and for Economics, the problem in the Summers/Epstein exchanges isn't Epstein, it's Summers./1

A reminder: Tariffs are a regressive tax. The anti-Robin Hood.

Trump's current tariff settings effectively impose a tax rate on low-income households that's roughly TRIPLE that on high-income folks. That's not the way taxes are supposed to work.

I am not being hyperbolic when I say that how Harvard and the economics profession respond to Larry Summers will determine who makes up the next generation of economists.

1/ Egalitarianism should begin at home. I link to this article by @bencasselman.bsky.social in light of the communications between Larry Summers and Jeffrey Epstein that have just been released. The released emails and the fact of friendship are vile.

Is Larry Summers *finally* canceled yet? It has been such a long time coming.

Larry Summers needs to resign or be pushed out of Harvard. This is absolutely unacceptable.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

Why in the world is an email more newsworthy if released by a congressional committee than if sent to a reporter directly? That makes zero sense. This exact thinking is what made NYT vulnerable to the kind of right wing manipulation we’ve seen for the last decade.
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.

If they are doing this, at the very least, they should be taking credit for restoring SNAP benefits. Like: Donald Trump was trying to illegally starve American children, and we acted to stop it. But they can’t even get the messaging right.

Are you listening, Democrats? The next time we have a trifecta, DC and PR statehood are non-negotiable.
Trump: "They're gonna make DC a state and they're gonna make Puerto Rico a state. So now they pick up two states, four senators. They're gonna pick up electoral votes. It's gonna be a very, very bad situation. Now, if we do what I'm saying, they'll most likely never obtain power."

whatever you think of Spanberger, the fact that her opponent ran a campaign based almost entirely on transphobia and is on track to eat shit in the biggest blowout the state has seen since 2009 is unambiguously a huge win
Earle-Sears ran what felt like 12 billion ads about how much she hated trans kids and I didn’t hear a single pundit say she should stick to real issues that affect real people.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrat Abigail Spanberger wins Virginia governor’s race.

I'm scared all the time and it's exhausting. The cruelty in my country toward the poverty class and the disabled still takes my breath away. So many people truly think I have SNAP because I'm too lazy to provide for myself. I'm a quadriplegic. I truly need help.

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions

"Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"

War Powers Law Does Not Apply to Trump’s Boat Strikes, Administration Says

The stance deepened the idea that a Vietnam-era law, which says congressionally unauthorized deployments into “hostilities” must end after 60 days, does not apply to airstrike campaigns.
