Gov't officials just surprised many by apparently calling for the revival of #LawfulAccess measures from #BillC2. Here's my take on it, with some corrections/clarifications of some pretty problematic statements from gov't officials.

Can lawyers safely use AI on client files or Crown disclosure?

Law society and Crown policies don’t offer clear answers.
Even “legal AI” tools like Lexis’ Protégé leave room for doubt.

Some lawyers — and courts — are turning to the nuclear option: running AI offline.

Can doctors claim a privacy violation because RateMDs creates profiles and ranks them without consent? The BC Court of Appeal says no. Civil #privacy claims require information that’s really “private”. New on my YouTube channel: youtu.be/AqmvwTs0qAA

I've seen a few people online giving kudos to the LaSalle police for laying charges based on alleged antisemitic online posts. The cynic in me assumes that it was more likely the threats against the police that got the attention of the police. www.ctvnews.ca/windsor/arti...

Even with this sanitized (not declassified) report from NSICOP, nowhere is the case made out for Bill C-2's intercept technologies or even the specifics of what they're asking for. If the public safety minister were to release what he'd propose as regulations, we could have a real discussion.
Do police and CSIS need new “lawful intercept” powers to keep up with technology?

Parliament says yes. But in a new declassified report meant to justify Bill C-2, it offers little hard data to back this up.

Canada’s privacy regulators want TikTok to keep kids off the platform — but how far should companies go to prove a user’s age? And what about the privacy of other users? And they apparently want even longer privacy policies. Hmm. New on my YouTube channel: youtu.be/YWCno6K9XX8

What a story to come out while the Senate LCJC Ctee holds its hearings on Bill S-209 (i.e. "age assurance"). Could see this as a kind of privacy version of the heckler's veto by those against such legislation, leaving lawmakers btwn rock and hard place in terms of holistic privacy and safety aims.
