On this day in 1924, Edward Appleton conducted a neat experiment to prove the existence of a radio-reflecting layer in the Earth's upper atmosphere.

The huge M8.8 earthquake at Kamchatka Peninsula last night not only shook the earth. It also generated gravity waves in the atmosphere which echoed around the world, causing the ionosphere to oscillate too.
