I genuinely have no idea how to convey this to the American people, but I think the biggest impediment to any kind of immigration reform is that people are convinced that "legal" and "illegal" are immutable, intrinsic categories instead of a rapidly-shifting arbitrary constellation of regulations.

The key is to force an actual debate on the question of a permanent militarized Federal internal security state, something that nobody actually voted for and very few people want, and not just let them smuggle the premise in via the terms of debate.
part of the reason I’m bullish on formal anti-ICE messaging and don’t anticipate a cooling off of the sentiment like “defund the police” is that there’s no ICE equivalent to this. the police, for whatever you think of them, are something people consider part of daily life. ICE isn’t like that!
