MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

Probably so, but Warning from Space remains a delightfully weird representative of 1950s Japanese sci fi/fantasy, just so bewilderingly entertaining.

If you want proof that people are incapable of learning here is your reminder that Titanic had a sister ship called the Brittanic that was pressed into service as a hospital ship during WW1 and was so successful that they called her unsinkable and then she sank on the next voyage

"The Monster Club" (1981) is an insanely goofy horror anthology with some of the dopiest lore you will ever hear. Vincent Price has to do an exposition dump early on about all the various mixes of monster species that includes words like "vamgoos" and "shadmocks"

Wisdom from George Saunders, in his newsletter:
It’s interesting the way that the world these days seems to make us feel that we need to have an opinion on everything, even when having a certain opinion may not change anything we do, or anything about the way the world responds.

We seem to be losing the ability or desire to just be silent on certain questions. (Silent and sad; silent and interested; silent and alert.)

I'm watching Curse of Frankenstein for the first time (I love Hammer horror but somehow always missed this one). I love Peter Cushing's take on Victor. From the moment he's on screen you understand that he's someone who, through immense privilege, can't comprehend his actions having consequences.

PRAY FOR DOLLY PARTON ❤️‍🩹

Freida Parton, sister of Dolly Parton, asks for prayers for Dolly’s health. She says with prayers she know Dolly is going to be just fine.

We all love you, Dolly! Praying 💛

Wait, is that the ORIGINAL voynich manuscript? Where did you GET that? Wanna try playing a round of Druids and Dicotyledons?

xkcd.com/593/
[Weird root vegetables surround a strange script.]
[Megan holding up book to Cueball.]
Megan: This is the Voynich manuscript— a book, allegedly 500 years old, written in an unrecognized script. It's some kind of visual encyclopedia of imaginary plants and undeciphered "recipes".
[Megan points while Cueball opens the book.]
Megan: It could be a hoax, a lost language, a cipher, an alien text, glossolatia — no one knows.
Cueball: No one? But it's obvious.
[Megan continues to talk. Cueball holds the now closed book.]
Megan: ... Obvious? Linguists and cryptographers have been stumped for decades.
Cueball: They forget. Human nature doesn't change.
[Close up of Megan and Cueball - the book is off panel.]
Cueball: Just imagine someone found a book from our time, full of lists, illustrations, tables, and long, dry descriptions of nonexistent worlds written in an invented language. What have they found?
Megan: ...Dear Lord. It is obvious.

[Three people are standing around pawns and a die. One (a Cueball) is holding a sheet of paper, another (another Cueball) is holding a book, the third (Megan) is holding a scythe. At the top of the panel there is a frame with the following text:]
500 Years Earlier:
Person #1: Forsooth! I concoct an elixer of courage.
Person #2: Nae! The source booke sayeth that requires some wolfsbane!
Person #3: Your druid doth lose two points.

I grew up going to Zabar's. So many of my childhood memories center around the best lox in NYC (which is saying something). With Saul Zabar's passing today, the Upper West Side has lost a legend who turned his parent's humble store into a culinary institution.

Snow Trail (1947) is rightfully remembered as the debut film of world's sexiest man ever Toshiro Mifune but I really don't think it can be underscored enough how insanely good Takashi Shimura is in it as well

Blast from the past: Didn’t catch any z’s and I believe the tape choice was my contribution, but the liner credits/spinal title should match the handwriting.
