Very interesting read for game designers.

Incentivising ethical behavior in games reduces ethical player decisions into only optimal decisions in which ethical consideration was not involved by the player, disconnecting them from the ethical component.
(Don't) Incentivise Ethical Behaviour
In the ongoing project of rescuing useful thoughts off Xwitter, here's another hot take of mine, reheated: "Being good for a reward isn’t being good---it’s just optimal play." The quote comes from...

Every so often I see or hear something about Jerma and I have to conclude he's a sim someone made for the exclusive purpose of being a public jester who got ported over into reality for all of us to enjoy his antics. Great guy.

yep, exactly

and as a writer, even if you are providing a ton of mechnical detail and technobabble, you should still think of that as about mood and atmosphere! 'hard scifi' is just another aesthetic

i don't want to know WHY the mech's reactor works, or the specifics of its shutdown sequence, or its manufacturer's lore. i want to hear how it thrums comfortingly next to the cockpit, how it strains when pushed to the limit, how it purrs and growls like a living beast at the very heart of the mech.

i remember seeing a thread by someone else here, talking about how poetic descriptions of mechs (or indeed any complex machine) is always far more effective than technical details, and i firmly believe that's true for even the hardest sci-fi writing in existence. separate the technobabble.
