So you'll buy this, but then you'll buy part three separately and it'll look weird. And then the inevitable three game pack will be released so you'll buy that as well.

(says me, who made the mistake of buying Remake digitally and Rebirth as a boxed game...)

For #RandomGameSaturday the random number generator pointed me to Mawaru Made In Wario.

I know it got an English release in Twisted, but I picked this up from an online seller long after the GBA was finished. And it's not like there's that much of a language barrier for a collection of microgames.

It's a really nice collection. I bought it on launch almost to support the thing - there are games on there that were still trapped on the Xbox 360 ffs

It feels a bit cliché to use it as cultural shorthand for the Playstation vibe, but it definitely stuck with me ("it's not a phase, honest!" 😁 )

TLDR: I thought I owed everything to Wipeout, but maybe I was just in the right place at the right time? These days I'm more into D&B and a bit of IDM, but I'm still checking in on those soundtrack heroes ❤️

Dead Cities in '96. Fat of the Land in '97. Surrender in '99. Rhythm & Stealth in '99. And I was regularly listening to Radio 1 who had done things like exclusive track previews from Surrender and R&S, so it wasn't just a Wipeout thing. For me it was like having my own mini golden era of music (3/4)

The thing is, I believed that Wipeout was solely responsible for me being into Leftfield, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, etc. But really I think I was in the right space at the right time. Up to '95 or '96 I was mainly interested in chart-friendly dance music, but then things got nuts... (2/4)

Earlier today I started writing an article about how Wipeout shaped my interest in music for a time, but it kind of fell off a cliff and felt a bit self-indulgent. That said, there was some stuff in there that I wanted to retain for the record. Maybe I'll flesh it out properly in the future... (1/4)

Discourse: “Absolum!”
Brain: why is everyone suddenly talking about that RPG from Sloclap?

I knew exactly what this would be before clicking and it was still great.

A conversation about Kendrick and Metal Gear led me to a divine revelation that I have made manifest on this mortal earth:

People definitely have trouble disassociating games in niche genres. The latest I've seen is Sonic Crossworlds discourse where people expect Mario Kart and then complain because it's doing its own thing and not Mario Kart.

Meanwhile I haven't played a kart game since Like A Dragon, so

Yeah, the production's too good. 😁Nice bits of nostalgia bait though; there are definitely samples that were used in Prodigy's "Your Love" etc.

Passing time with the first-person roguelike Into The Pit lately, and Vampirisim builds are a lot of fun. The first perk is something like "20% chance to regain some health after a kill" but the next upgrade can immediately bump it to an 80% chance. Super useful when healing is scarce.

I haven’t played Hades II, but memory test exercises under pressure can be particularly rough for neurodivergent gamers. I’ll either beat a sequence into me through repeat attempts, or pause and use Steam Notes.

Too many people think memorization is a basic skill anyone can just “get better” at. I’m sure it is for the typically wired brain, but I have major struggles with my short-term memory.

A fight that punishes me to such a ridiculous extreme for that is so very not fun.

I have managed to reach the tenth floor on Fatal Labyrinth today, and was struck by the most INSANE REVEAL in all of video gaming:

**Fatal Labyrinth has MORE THAN ONE SONG IN IT** 😱

I get this in reverse: sometimes I can be unwinding to music and just start daydreaming note charts for rhythm games; where certain vibes would be perfect matches for particular gameplay.

Me listening to music is like “I thought this song was a 4/10, but then it sampled the keys from “Gypsy Woman” so that pushes it to an 8 at least”

I lost sound but this quick capture should illustrate it! I do make an accidental landing though, so it's best to get back in the air quickly if it happens.
