This is where I grew up, 1 gas station & 1 traffic light that flashes for a stop sign. Why the fuck, would young people have any desire to live here aside from the beauty of nature? BUT the people there ruin even that aspect!

Add to all of that the bad economic conditions, most people had some substance or alcohol abuse issues (I'm no prude, I love a little chemical escapism as a treat!) leading to child abuse/ neglect being more prevalent & more severe because it's easier to hide out in the sticks.

I loved the parts of my teen years living in a rural area for nature reasons but maaan, the people sucked 75% were maliciously racist & homophobic & the other 24% were ignorantly the same- well meaning but still said & did some diabolical shit out of ignorance & a lack of curiosity. 1/2

I didn't say you were assuming anything, I said you're giving them too much benefit of the doubt. Part of the reason dudes like this even exist is because the USA as a society has not bothered to address the racism & white supremacy within, to the point that we continue to perpetuate it.
